Whether a wall in Lilliput should be filled, lined inside or clad outside depends on what is in it and how much weather it takes off the harbour, and we tell you which after a borescope survey, before anything is sold. For lofts and floors, see insulation in Lilliput.
Usually one of these has happened in a Lilliput house. A bedroom on the water side of the house stays cold all winter and grows black mould behind the wardrobe. A wall was filled some years back and has shown damp patches indoors since. Or an EPC has recommended cavity wall insulation and nobody has checked whether this house suits it.
Thomas comes out, looks at each wall from inside and out, and gives you a free written itemised quote that says what should be done, by whom, and why.
The work
Finding out what is in the wall, then choosing

Looking inside the wall comes first. We drill one small hole through a mortar joint and put a borescope camera in. It shows straight away if there is a cavity at all, how wide it is, whether rubble and mortar have dropped in and bridged it, and whether anyone has filled it already.
From a Lilliput drive a nine inch solid brick wall and a brick and block cavity wall can look identical, and behind render there is no telling. We also take moisture readings indoors, and look at the pointing, the sills, the gutters and the direction each elevation faces.
Cavity fill. A clean, dry Lilliput cavity in sound brickwork that is not badly exposed to driving rain can take a blown fill of bonded bead or mineral wool through a drilled pattern of holes. That is carried out by a separate cavity wall installer rather than by us, and you should keep their paperwork with the deeds. Before any fill, the pointing, cracked render, leaking gutters and blocked air bricks want putting right, and we will tell you which of those your wall needs.
Lining a room from inside. When a Lilliput wall is wrong for a fill, or only one room is the problem, the insulation goes on the inside face. The slimmest option is insulated plasterboard, a board bonded to PIR from makers like Celotex or Kingspan. Where a solid wall has to keep drying, a timber stud or battens packed with mineral wool is the breathable choice. The awkward bits get the care: window reveals, the joint with the floor and the joist ends, because any strip left bare becomes the cold bridge where condensation settles. Expect a few days a room, skim coat included.
Cladding the outside. External wall insulation, EWI, makes most sense when the render is due for renewal. Boards are fixed over the brick, a render carrier and mesh go over those, and a thin coat render finishes it. Because it wraps the house in one layer it deals with the thermal bridge at every floor edge and corner, and it takes the rain off the brickwork, but the sills, the pipes and the eaves line all have to come out to meet it. The whole elevation goes under scaffold.
Fill that has gone wrong. Some older fills in Lilliput have slumped, leaving the top of the wall empty and cold, and some carry rain across the gap, so the inside wall shows damp. A wet cavity must be cleared before anything else is tried. Extraction is specialist work, and if the camera shows it is needed we say so plainly.
Air still has to move. Stop the draughts in a Lilliput house and you also stop what was drying the room. We check trickle vents, kitchen and bathroom extract fans and air bricks as part of the job. What you notice first is heat staying in the room overnight, and the EPC rating follows.
How it runs
From your call to a written price
One person to ring from the first visit to the last. The quote is itemised, not a figure on the back of a card: the survey and any borescope check, the system and its thickness, making good around windows and doors, ventilation works, and disposal on separate lines, so you can compare it properly against anyone else's.
Nothing is left open or unusable overnight. The site is swept at the end of each day rather than the end of the job, and what comes out leaves with us. If something turns up once we start that nobody could have seen, you get a photograph and a price before we carry on.
Lining a wall inside needs no planning application, as the Planning Portal guidance on insulation confirms, but it is building control work under regulation 23 and has to meet Approved Document L. Cladding the outside changes how the house looks, and inside the Evening Hill conservation area, on the harbour side of Sandbanks Road, expect to need consent from BCP Council first, and the council keeps the list of where each boundary runs.
Cost
What decides the price of a wall insulation job

No rate per square metre, because the wall area is the easy part; what happens at every window, door and floor junction is not.
Getting to it. A house with every wall reachable from its own drive off Lilliput Road, a gable on the slope above the harbour that needs a scaffold on stepped ground, and a flat in a block where the walls are shared with the other owners each set the day up differently. Cavity fill is drilled from outside and a bungalow comes off a tower where a three storey gable wants a scaffold. Internal lining is worked room by room from inside, so it is your rooms rather than a platform that gets disrupted. The work at height rules still set the platform.
Which wall you actually have. A cavity that is clear and dry can be filled in a day. A solid wall cannot be filled at all, and has to be lined inside or insulated outside, which is a different job at a different price. A borescope through one drilled hole settles it, and no honest quote is written before that.
The junctions, not the field of the wall. Reveals at windows and doors, the floor junction, the eaves and any party wall are where heat escapes and where condensation shows up if the detailing is wrong. That work is slow, it is most of the labour, and it is the first thing a cheap quote leaves out.
Comparing quotes? Ask whether the wall has actually been checked with a borescope or just assumed, what system and what thickness is specified, how the reveals and floor junction are being detailed, whether ventilation is being addressed, and who makes good the plaster and decoration afterwards.
If damp has appeared
Damp or mould after a wall was insulated
Ring rather than use the form. Damp patches or black mould appearing on an outside wall after cavity fill or internal lining usually means water is tracking across the cavity, or warm air is reaching a cold surface at a junction.
We look before we take anything out, because the fix depends on which of those it is. If a damp patch on an inside wall appears after a south westerly with rain, note the date and the wind, because that points to water crossing the cavity rather than condensation in the room. Scheduled work runs Monday to Friday, 8am to 6pm. For anything urgent, ring rather than use the form, and if we cannot pick up we ring you back as soon as we can.
Worth knowing
How much rain your wall takes decides whether it can be filled
Not every cavity wall suits a fill, and the biggest single reason is driving rain. Rain blown hard at a wall soaks the outer leaf of brick. In an empty cavity that water runs down the inside face of the outer leaf and out at the bottom.
Fill the cavity and the fill can give it a path across to the inner wall, and that shows up as damp patches inside, the opposite of what you paid for. Installers are meant to assess each wall's exposure before they fill it.
That matters in Lilliput, because wind reaching the walls here has crossed a long stretch of open harbour water with nothing to slow it. So the elevation facing the water can be unsuitable for a fill even when the sheltered side of the same house is fine. Ask any installer which exposure they have allowed for, wall by wall, and whether the brickwork and pointing are sound enough. Where the answer is doubtful, lining that wall inside or cladding it outside keeps the rain problem out of the cavity altogether, and we will set the options out side by side on the quote.

Questions
Questions about wall insulation in Lilliput
Can every cavity wall be filled?
No, not every Lilliput cavity can be filled. A cavity bridged with mortar, a wall with failing pointing, or an elevation that takes heavy driving rain can be made worse by a fill. The borescope survey tells you which walls suit it.
Who should fill a cavity, and what paperwork should I get?
A separate cavity wall installer, not us. Ask them for their paperwork when the job is done and keep it with the deeds, because a buyer's solicitor will ask for it.
Our cavity was filled years ago and a wall is now damp. What now?
Check first whether the damp wall faces the harbour. If it does, rain off the water is probably crossing on the fill; if not, it may have slumped. The borescope tells you which. A failed fill has to come out, and the cause of the wetting is fixed first.
Will internal insulation make my rooms smaller?
By a few centimetres on each lined wall, which in a harbour-view room usually means cutting the window boards back a little. Skirtings, sockets and radiators come off and go back on.
