We repair and replace render in Lilliput: cracked and blown sand and cement, tired pebbledash, and new silicone or monocouche systems, with the background prepared properly first. You get a written, itemised price after we have looked.
Render in Lilliput usually needs attention once it cracks, greens or simply looks tired. A crack has opened in the render and a patch round it sounds hollow when tapped. The walls have gone green or streaky, usually on the side that faces the weather. Or the owner wants a tired, patched finish replaced with a clean modern render in one colour.
We come out, tap the render to map what is hollow, look at the cracks, and check the wall behind where it is open. You get photographs, an honest view on repair or replacement, and a written quote.
The work
What goes on the wall, and what has to come off first

Repairs. Render that has blown, meaning it has parted from the wall behind, has to be hacked off back to a sound edge. We cut the edges square, prepare the background, and build the patch back up in coats to match the thickness and the texture around it. A crack on its own can often be cut out and filled, as long as the render either side is still bonded.
Full re-renders. When too much of a Lilliput wall is hollow, patching stops being good value. We hack off the old render, clean down and stabilise the brick or block, then apply a basecoat with a mesh embedded in it, a bead at every corner and a bellcast over the damp proof course, and a topcoat.
Which system. A through-coloured silicone thin coat render is the usual choice in Lilliput now. It sheds water, resists algae and does not need painting. Monocouche is a one coat, through-coloured render with a scraped finish. Traditional sand and cement is painted, and still suits some houses. On a solid wall, an older building or anything built with lime, we use a breathable lime render, because a cement render on a wall like that traps moisture behind it.
Pebbledash and texture. We can repair pebbledash, dash or tyrolean finishes on a Lilliput house to match, or replace them with a smooth or float finish if you prefer. We put up a sample so you can see the colour and texture on your wall before we commit to it.
External wall insulation. Where a Lilliput wall is solid and cold, insulation boards can go on under the render, with the render carrier system built over them. That brings building control and Approved Document L into it, and we will say whether it is worth it for your house.
When we would talk you out of it. A green wall often only needs cleaning and a biocide, not new render. We will tell you if that is all it is.
How it runs
From your call to a written price
One person to ring from the first visit to the last. The quote is itemised, not a figure on the back of a card: access and scaffold, protection, preparation of the existing wall, the system and number of coats, beads and stop ends, and making good on separate lines, so you can compare it properly against anyone else's.
On a Lilliput job nothing is left open or unusable overnight. The site is swept at the end of each day rather than the end of the job, and what comes out leaves with us. If something turns up once we start that nobody could have seen, you get a photograph and a price before we carry on.
Repairing render like for like needs no planning permission. Rendering a brick wall for the first time, or changing the colour or finish, can need it, and inside the Evening Hill conservation area expect it to, so check with the council keeps the list before the scaffold goes up.
Cost
What decides the price of a rendering job

No rate per square metre, because the square metres are the easy part; what is already on the wall decides the price.
Getting to it. A two storey house with a drive takes a straightforward scaffold, while a house on the slope above the harbour, with a tall rear elevation over a stepped garden, needs a scaffold built for the ground. A bungalow gable comes off a tower, a three storey elevation wants a scaffold, and the platform has to stand for the whole system rather than a day. The work at height rules are why it is a priced line rather than something folded into a rate.
What is already on the wall. Rendering over sound brick is one job. Hacking off blown sand and cement, or a pebbledash that has parted from the background, is another, and it is the part nobody can see from the road. We tap the whole elevation before quoting, because the hollow areas set the hours.
The system, and what the wall behind it needs. Silicone thin coat over insulation, monocouche through-coloured, or traditional sand and cement all price differently and behave differently. On a solid wall that has to breathe, a plastic-rich modern system traps moisture and moves the problem inside, so the right system is a wall decision rather than a colour decision.
Comparing quotes for a Lilliput render? Ask which system is being quoted and how many coats, whether the old render is being hacked off or overlaid, whether beads, bellcast and stop ends are included, whether the scaffold is in the price, and what happens to the existing sills and pipework.
If it has started to come away
Render that has blown or cracked open
Ring rather than use the form. A section that sounds hollow when you tap it, or a crack you can get a coin into, is letting water behind the render and the frost does the rest.
We make the loose area of a Lilliput wall safe, sheet it if the weather is against us, and price the elevation once we can see how far the blown area actually goes. If a piece of render has come off near a door or a path, keep people away from the wall below it until we have checked what else is loose. Scheduled work runs Monday to Friday, 8am to 6pm. For anything urgent, ring rather than use the form, and if we cannot pick up we ring you back as soon as we can.
Worth knowing
Evening Hill is a conservation area, and render is how it looks
Part of Lilliput, on the harbour side of Sandbanks Road around Evening Hill, is a conservation area designated by the council. Inside it, repairing render like for like is maintenance. Changing it is not.
Rendering over a brick front, swapping a painted render for a through-coloured one in a different shade, or taking render off a wall changes the look of the street, and that is what the designation exists to control. Landfall on Crichel Mount Road is a listed building as well, and on a listed building any change to the walls needs listed building consent.
So if your house is in or next to Evening Hill, find out before you choose a colour or a system, not after. The council's conservation area pages tell you whether an address is inside. If it is, we will match the existing finish, or help you put together the details the council will ask for before any change goes ahead. Outside it, the choice of system and colour is yours.

Questions
Questions about rendering in Lilliput
Can cracked render be repaired, or does it all need replacing?
If the render either side of the crack is still bonded, it can be repaired. When large areas sound hollow, a full re-render is better value. We tap and map it before we quote.
Which render system is best?
A through-coloured silicone render suits most walls because it sheds water and resists algae. Solid and older walls need breathable lime. We explain the choice on the quote.
Do I need permission to render my house?
Repairs like for like, no. Rendering brick for the first time or changing the colour can need it, and inside the Evening Hill conservation area you should expect it to.
How long does a re-render take?
A typical house is two to three weeks, depending on the weather, because render cannot go on in frost or heavy rain.
