Driveways in Lilliput
New drives and repairs on the harbour edge of Poole, with the base, the fall and the paperwork for the road outside all sorted first.
The site visit is free and so is the written itemised quote. Thomas Hannen prices every job himself.

New driveways in Lilliput often start with a slope: a drive climbing from the road on the streets that rise from the harbour, or one that tips back towards the garage. We lay block paving, resin, tarmac, concrete and natural stone, repair drives that have sunk or cracked, sort the fall and where the water goes, and put the price in writing. For back gardens, see patios in Lilliput.
Drives in Lilliput tend to tip the wrong way, crack and sink, or raise a planning question. A drive that tips towards the house or the garage, so every shower ends up as a puddle at the door. An old surface that has cracked, sunk where the car sits and let weeds in along every joint. Or a front garden the owner wants to park on, which on some roads here is a planning question before it is a paving one.
Thomas measures the frontage and takes the levels from the road to the house, lifts the drain covers, and digs out a corner to see what the old surface sits on. The written itemised quote is free, and where a repair will do, that is what you are quoted for.
The work
Base first, then the surface, then the water

The base comes first. Nearly every failed drive failed from below. We excavate to firm formation, lay a geotextile membrane, and build the sub-base in compacted layers to a depth that suits the ground and the weight of the car. Any old concrete that rocks comes out. Muck away goes to a grab lorry or a skip, planned around the road outside.
Block paving. Blocks forgive settlement better than anything else: one that dips can be pulled up and reset and nobody will ever see where. The price of that is a solid edge. A kerb or edge restraint set in a concrete haunch stops the outer rows walking outwards under the tyres. Kiln dried sand is swept into the joints on the day and again after a few weeks of use. Choose the permeable kind, with wider joints over an open graded base, and the rain goes into the ground under your own drive.
Resin, tarmac and concrete. Resin bound gravel drains through itself and looks tidy, but it wants a firm, dry, level base and has to go down in a single pour. Tarmac is the one to pick where the drive climbs from the road, because it grips on a slope and shrugs off a car turning on full lock. Concrete, whether plain or pattern imprinted, lasts, but water cannot pass through it and a repair always shows, so falls and a drain are part of the design, not an afterthought.
Natural stone and porcelain. Sawn sandstone, granite setts or a porcelain slab on a full mortar bed make a handsome drive for light cars, with pointing that is looked after. We say when a surface will not take the weight you plan to put on it.
Trees and walls in Evening Hill. Part of Lilliput lies in the Evening Hill conservation area, where most tree work needs six weeks' notice to the council. A new drive dug near a protected tree, or one that needs a branch cut back for the grab lorry, is flagged at the first visit so that notice runs before the start date. Where a front wall or hedge has to come down for a wider opening, we check first whether the change of look needs the council's view.
Drainage. A Lilliput drive has to fall away from the house and stay 150mm below the damp proof course. On a drive that falls towards the building, a channel drain across the bottom takes the water to a soakaway or a proper outfall, never just onto the pavement.
Mending rather than replacing. Wheel ruts, one sunken corner, a kerb knocked loose, a puddle that sits by the garage door, oil marks, weeds in every joint. Plenty of these take a day or two to put right, and if that is all your drive needs, that is what we quote for.
How it runs
From your call to a written price
One person to ring from the first visit to the last. The quote is itemised, not a figure on the back of a card: excavation, muck away, the sub base, edgings, the surface itself and the drainage on separate lines, so you can compare it properly against anyone else's.
Nothing is left open or unusable overnight. The site is swept at the end of each day rather than the end of the job, and what comes out leaves with us. If something turns up once we start that nobody could have seen, you get a photograph and a price before we carry on.
Paving a front garden in Lilliput is permitted development for a house if the surface is permeable or drains onto your own ground, and needs planning permission if more than five square metres of sealed surface runs to the road. Flats have no permitted development rights for this. A new or wider dropped kerb is a separate application to BCP Council as highway authority, and inside the Evening Hill conservation area a change to a front wall or boundary needs checking with the council keeps the list too.
Cost
What decides the price of a driveway

No rate per square metre, because what is under it decides more of the cost than what goes on top.
Getting to it. A frontage on Sandbanks Road with the bus route outside, a drive that climbs from the road on one of the streets rising from the harbour, and a level drive off a quiet road near Lilliput Road call for different methods before a machine arrives. Everything arrives and everything leaves by the same route. A drive you can back a lorry onto is cheaper to build than one where every barrow goes through a side gate.
The sub base. The part you never see is the part that decides whether the surface is still flat in ten years. Ground conditions, how deep it has to be dug and how much muck goes away are the real variables.
Water, and where it is allowed to go. Surface water has to be dealt with on the property rather than run into the road, which means a permeable surface or somewhere for it to soak away. That is a design decision with a cost, not an afterthought.
Comparing quotes? Ask how deep the dig is and what sub base is going in, where the surface water is going, whether the edgings are haunched, and who takes the spoil away.
If it is urgent
A trip hazard, or a drive that floods

Ring rather than use the form. A lifted slab, a sunken bay by a doorway or a gully that has stopped taking water are the ones that will not wait, because somebody falls or water ends up against the house.
The first visit is about making it safe and getting the water going somewhere, and we quote the permanent work once the ground can be opened up. If water is standing against the front wall or running under the garage door after rain, clear the gully and send us a photograph, because that is the part to fix first. Scheduled work runs Monday to Friday, 8am to 6pm. For anything urgent, ring rather than use the form, and if we cannot pick up we ring you back as soon as we can.
Worth knowing
A new drive onto Sandbanks Road

Sandbanks Road runs through Lilliput to the ferry and is a classified road, the B3369, with a bus route and heavy summer traffic heading for the beaches. On a quiet side street a new drive needs the dropped kerb approved and that is usually the end of it.
A brand new access onto the B3369 through Lilliput needs planning permission on top of the kerb approval. BCP Council will look at how far you can see each way, where the bus stops are, and whether the car can turn on your drive and leave forwards instead of reversing into the summer traffic.
It shapes what we draw. Where a Lilliput plot is wide enough we give you room to turn and drive out forwards, we keep the wall or hedge down low beside the new crossing so you can see cyclists and people on the pavement, and we make sure rain from the drive stays on your land. The road status is confirmed with BCP before the quote goes out, and the applications go in first, since they take longer than the digging. The dig itself is planned for outside the busiest summer weeks where we can, because a grab lorry parked on that road in August helps nobody. If permission looks unlikely, we tell you before you spend anything.

Planning at a glance

Questions
Questions about driveways in Lilliput
How long does a new drive take?
A typical frontage in block paving is about a week once the paperwork is done. Resin or tarmac is quicker. Digging out the old surface is often the slowest part.
Do I need permission for a drive onto Sandbanks Road?
Yes, if it is a new access. Sandbanks Road is a classified road, so it needs planning permission as well as the dropped kerb, and the council will want to see you can turn and leave forwards. We confirm the road status with BCP before quoting.
My drive slopes towards the house. Can that be fixed?
Yes. We relevel it to fall away where the ground allows, and where it cannot, a channel drain across the bottom takes the water to a soakaway.
Which surface is best?
Block paving for durability and easy repair, resin for a neat porous finish, tarmac on a gradient. It depends on the base and the fall.
