We build and repair brickwork in Lilliput: garden and retaining walls, boundary walls, piers, chimneys and extensions, with the brick and the mortar matched to what is already there. You get a written, itemised price after we have looked.
Most brickwork trouble in Lilliput comes from movement. A garden wall that has started to lean towards the road. A retaining wall on a sloping plot with a crack running through it after a wet winter. A chimney stack with loose bricks near the top, or a gate pier knocked by a car.
We come out to Lilliput, look at the wall and what is behind it, and tell you whether it can be repaired or needs taking down and rebuilding. If a wall or a stack looks as if it could fall onto a path or a road, keep people away from it and ring 07435 839745.
The work
Walls that hold back ground, and walls that just stand

Garden and boundary walls. A freestanding wall needs a proper footing, a damp proof course near the bottom, movement joints on a long run, and a coping that throws water clear of both faces. A failed garden wall usually lacks one of those. We rebuild on a new foundation where the old one has gone, reuse the sound bricks, and set the bond and the coping to match the rest of the wall.
Retaining walls. A wall that holds back soil is a different structure from one that only stands up. It needs thickness or reinforcement for the height of ground behind it, and drainage through it, or water builds up behind and pushes it over. Where a retaining wall is bowed or cracked, we tell you honestly whether it can be tied back or has to come down, and when a structural engineer should see it first.
Piers, steps and gate pillars. A pier takes the weight of a gate on one side, so it cracks at the base. We cut out and rebuild, and bed the hinge fixings into solid work.
Chimneys. Loose bricks near the top of a stack, cracked flaunching round the pots and washed out joints on the weather side. We rebuild the top courses where needed, renew the flaunching and fit a new lead flashing where it meets the roof.
Extensions and new blockwork. For a new wall, a porch or a single storey extension we build in blockwork and face brick with a cavity, wall ties at the proper spacing and lintels over the openings, with building control involved from the start.
Matching. New brick against old always shows at first. We find the closest brick, reclaimed where that suits, and build a small sample panel so you can see the brick, the mortar colour and the joint before we go ahead. Where a wall mainly needs its joints renewing rather than rebuilding, that is our repointing work in Lilliput.
How it runs
From your call to a written price
One person to ring from the first visit to the last. The quote is itemised, not a figure on the back of a card: access, raking out, the mortar mix, the area of each elevation, any brick replacement and disposal on separate lines, so you can compare it properly against anyone else's.
Nothing on a Lilliput job is left open or unusable overnight. The site is swept at the end of each day rather than the end of the job, and what comes out leaves with us. If something turns up once we start that nobody could have seen, you get a photograph and a price before we carry on.
A garden wall up to a metre next to a road, or two metres elsewhere, needs no planning permission. A wall on the boundary with a neighbour can need a party wall notice. In the Evening Hill conservation area, taking down a wall or changing its materials can need consent, so check first with the council keeps the list.
Cost
What decides the price of a brickwork job

No rate per square metre, because the metre of wall tells you almost nothing until you know what the joints are like.
Getting to it. A Lilliput wall at the top of a sloping garden reached down a flight of steps costs more to supply than one next to a drive, and on Sandbanks Road a front wall is built with the pavement kept open. A chimney or a gable wants a scaffold, a garden wall wants nothing. How long the platform stands matters as much as its size, and the work at height rules are why it is a priced line rather than an optional extra.
The joints, not the wall. Raking out by hand is slow and is the only safe way on soft old brick. How deep the joints have to come out, and whether the brick faces have already spalled, decides the hours more than the area does.
The mix, and matching. Matching an existing mortar for colour, texture and strength takes trial panels. Matching a brick means sourcing it. Neither is a line most quotes make visible, and both are why two prices for the same wall can be so far apart.
Comparing quotes? Ask how deep the joints are being raked and by hand or by disc, what the mortar mix is and whether it has been matched, how many bricks are being replaced, and whether the scaffold is included. Without those answers, the figures cannot be compared fairly.
If something has moved
Loose brickwork, or a wall that has shifted

If anything overhead or leaning is involved, ring rather than use the form: a chimney with movement in it, a parapet, a garden wall pushed out by roots or a vehicle.
The first visit is about making it safe and stable, and we quote the permanent repair once we can see how far the movement goes. If a retaining wall is bulging or cracking after heavy rain, keep off the ground below it and do not pile anything on top of it. Scheduled work runs Monday to Friday, 8am to 6pm. For anything urgent, ring rather than use the form, and if we cannot pick up we ring you back as soon as we can.
Worth knowing
A sloping garden needs a retaining wall built as one

Lilliput is built on ground that falls towards Poole Harbour, and around Evening Hill and the roads above the shore that fall is steep. Where a garden is stepped into the slope with walls holding each level up, each wall has soil and water pressing on it all year. It is a structure, not a garden feature. Rebuilding it the same way as a freestanding garden wall is how it ends up leaning again.
So if a retaining wall in Lilliput has moved, ask how high the ground behind it is, how the new wall will be drained, and whether it needs an engineer's design before you ask anyone for a price. Weep holes and free draining backfill behind the wall stop water building up after rain. If the wall holds up a neighbour's ground as well as yours, talk to them early, because the work may fall under the Party Wall etc. Act 1996 and they have a stake in how it is done.

Questions
Questions about bricklaying in Lilliput
My retaining wall is leaning. Can it be saved?
Sometimes, if the lean is slight and the cause can be dealt with. If it is bowing or cracked right through, it usually needs rebuilding with proper drainage, and sometimes an engineer's design first.
Can you match my existing bricks?
As closely as the market allows. We find the nearest brick, reclaimed where that suits, and build a sample panel so you can see it before we start.
Do I need planning permission for a garden wall?
Not usually, up to a metre high next to a road or two metres elsewhere. The Evening Hill conservation area and listed buildings are different, so check first.
How long does a garden wall take?
A short run of wall is usually a few days, longer if the footing has to be dug out and poured again.
