Bricklaying in Canford Cliffs is mostly garden walls, retaining walls on sloping plots, chimneys and extensions on detached houses. We match the brick and the mortar to what is there and price every part of the job in writing.
Pine roots, sloping gardens and exposed stacks are behind a lot of the brickwork trouble in Canford Cliffs. A front wall has cracked where a pine root has got under it, or has started to lean. A retaining wall holding up a sloping garden has bellied out. A chimney stack has lost its flaunching and the brickwork round the top has gone loose. Or you are planning an extension and want a bricklayer who will match the house rather than just build next to it.
We come and look, measure, and work out why the wall has failed before suggesting how to rebuild it, because a wall rebuilt on the same bad footing fails again.
The work
Walls on slopes, walls near trees, and extensions that have to match

Garden and boundary walls. Most homes in Canford Cliffs sit on generous plots, and many are fronted by a brick wall with piers and a coping. The common faults are a cracked or bowed length, spalling bricks along the top where the coping has failed and frost has got in, and gate piers pushed out of line.
Where it is only the top courses, we take them down to sound work and relay them with a new coping. Where the whole length has moved, it comes down to the footing and is rebuilt. A garden wall repair is a day or two. A full rebuild runs longer, depending on the length.
Trees and walls. Canford Cliffs is heavily wooded, and mature pines grow close to a lot of boundaries. Roots lift a shallow footing and crack the wall above it in a stepped line. We will not simply cut the roots out: the tree may be protected by a Tree Preservation Order or by the conservation area, and taking the root that holds a pine up is not a safe fix anyway. Bridging the footing over the root with a lintel, or moving the line of the wall slightly, usually is.
Retaining walls. The ground falls away towards the chines and the harbour, so a sloping garden held up by a retaining wall is not unusual in Canford Cliffs. A retaining wall needs a proper foundation, drainage behind it and weep holes through it, and one that is bulging has usually been built without all three. We tell you honestly whether it can be repaired or has to be rebuilt.
Chimneys. Loose brick at the top of a stack, cracked flaunching and a failed pot are a scaffold job. We rebuild the top courses in matching brick, in a lime mortar where the stack is an older solid one, reset the pots and form new flaunching, and the lead round the base, covered under roofing, can be dressed from the same scaffold.
Extensions and new work. Garden rooms, garages and extensions in blockwork with a brick outer leaf, the right cavity, wall ties, a damp proof course (DPC), lintels over the openings and a bond that matches the house, usually stretcher bond on the post-war stock. Houses in Canford Cliffs were built across several decades in several shades of brick, often alongside render, so we lay a sample panel for you to approve before the walls go up, with the mortar mixed from a sand chosen to match the joint colour and a joint finish, flush or weather struck, to match the old work. Where a wall is simply tired rather than broken, repointing may be all it needs.
How it runs
From your call to a written price

Thomas comes out and prices the job himself. The quote is itemised, not a figure on the back of a card: access, raking out, the mortar mix, the area of each elevation, any brick replacement and disposal on separate lines, so you can compare it properly against anyone else's.
Nothing on a Canford Cliffs job is left open or unusable overnight. The site is swept at the end of each day rather than the end of the job, and what comes out leaves with us. If something turns up once we start that nobody could have seen, you get a photograph and a price before we carry on.
Repairs and like for like rebuilds need no application. A new extension usually needs building control, and work on or near a shared boundary can bring in the Party Wall Act. Parts of Canford Cliffs are in a conservation area and the council keeps the list, which changes the rules for front walls, as explained below.
Cost
What decides the price of a brickwork job

No rate per square metre, because the metre of wall tells you almost nothing until you know what the joints are like.
Getting to it. A Canford Cliffs front wall behind a gravel drive, a retaining wall at the bottom of a steep garden and a chimney on a two storey detached house are three different access problems, and on a terraced garden every brick and bag goes down the steps by hand. A chimney or a gable wants a scaffold, a garden wall wants nothing. How long the platform stands matters as much as its size, and the work at height rules are why it is a priced line rather than an optional extra.
The joints, not the wall. Raking out by hand is slow and is the only safe way on soft old brick. How deep the joints have to come out, and whether the brick faces have already spalled, decides the hours more than the area does.
The mix, and matching. Matching an existing mortar for colour, texture and strength takes trial panels. Matching a brick means sourcing it. Neither is a line most quotes make visible, and both are why two prices for the same wall can be so far apart.
Comparing quotes? Ask how deep the joints are being raked and by hand or by disc, what the mortar mix is and whether it has been matched, how many bricks are being replaced, and whether the scaffold is included. The same wall can be priced for quite different work.
If something has moved
Loose brickwork, or a wall that has shifted

Ring rather than use the form. Anything overhead or leaning goes to the front of the queue: a chimney with movement in it, a parapet, a garden wall pushed out by roots or a vehicle.
The first visit is about making it safe and stable, and we quote the permanent repair once we can see how far the movement goes. If a wall beside the pavement is leaning towards it, keep people clear and tape it off, because a garden wall can go over without much warning after heavy rain. Scheduled work runs Monday to Friday, 8am to 6pm. For anything urgent, ring rather than use the form, and if we cannot pick up we ring you back as soon as we can.
Worth knowing
Front walls in the conservation areas
Two conservation areas reach into Canford Cliffs: the Canford Cliffs Village area around the Haven Road shops, and the Branksome Park and Chine Gardens area to the east, with its tree-lined roads. Inside them, knocking down a wall next to a road that stands above a metre high needs planning permission first, and doing it without is an offence under section 196D. Repairing it, or taking down the top courses and relaying them in the same brick, does not.
So if a front wall there is failing, the order of work matters. We record what is there, photograph it, keep and clean the sound bricks for reuse, and rebuild to the same height, bond and coping. If you want it lower, higher or in a different material, that is a conversation with the council before anything comes down, and the Planning Portal explains the limits. Trees in the same areas are protected too, so a root in the way is a question for the council, not a saw.

Questions
Questions about bricklaying in Canford Cliffs
Can you match the bricks on my house?
Usually, yes. We take a sample to the merchants, and where the brick is no longer made we look for reclaimed stock or reuse sound bricks from the wall itself. You see a sample panel before we build.
My garden wall has a crack. Does it need rebuilding?
Not always. A fine stepped crack that has not moved in years can be cut out and repaired. A crack that is widening, or a wall that has started to lean, needs the cause fixing first, and that usually means the footing.
How long does a new garden wall take?
A short run with a coping is a few days, including digging the footing and letting it go off. Longer or higher walls, piers and curves add time, and the quote says how long we expect.
Will you clear up afterwards?
Yes. Spoil, broken brick and old mortar leave with us, the drive and paths are swept each day, and any sound bricks you want to keep are cleaned and stacked.
