Gutter cleaning in Canford Cliffs is mostly a pine needle job. We clear every run by hand, flush each outlet and downpipe through with water to prove it drains, and tell you about any joint or bracket that needs attention, with a photograph and a separate price.
What goes wrong with a Canford Cliffs gutter: The gutter on the side nearest the pines pours over its front edge whenever it rains hard. A downpipe gurgles and backs up, and the gully at the bottom stays dry. Or a block has runs round the building that the managing agent needs cleared before winter.
If a blocked gutter is already putting water through a ceiling or down an inside wall, ring 07435 839745 instead of filling in the form, and tell us which side of the house it is on. For everything else, Thomas comes out, looks at the roof from the ground and the ladder, and prices the clear in writing.
The work
What a clear involves under the pines

Pine needles, and why they are slower than leaves. Canford Cliffs sits among tall pines, and needles behave differently from broadleaf litter. They fall in fine strands that knit together in the bottom of the gutter, hold water like a sponge and turn into a dense wet mat with moss growing through it.
They also come down over a longer season than leaves do. We scoop that mat out by hand from the ladder, bag it as we go instead of dropping it into your borders, and scrape the silt off the bottom of the run so the gutter is back to its proper fall.
Outlets, downpipes and the gully. Needles slide down an outlet more easily than a leaf does, so in Canford Cliffs the blockage is often halfway down the pipe or packed in the shoe at the bottom. Every downpipe gets water run through it while you watch. Where one will not clear we rod it, and if it still backs up we put a camera down to see whether the problem is the pipe or the drain it empties into.
Big houses with complicated roofs. Many of the detached houses in Canford Cliffs have several gables, dormers, valleys and a long drop over a sloping garden. A valley gutter between two slopes takes the needles off both of them, and when it blocks the water goes under the tiles, not over an edge. Those get cleared from a safe platform, and on a three storey elevation that means a tower, not a ladder.
Blocks of flats. The flats that make up much of Canford Cliffs are mostly purpose built blocks from the seventies and eighties. Some have long eaves runs over a car park, others have flat roofs draining to outlets and hopper heads, sometimes into downpipes that run inside the building. We price those for the managing agent, agree a date that keeps the car park usable, and report outlet by outlet what we found.
Where we would talk you out of something. Gutter guards are the usual request under Canford Cliffs pines, and they help less than people hope, because needles lie on top of a mesh or feed through it. We would rather clear the run properly and tell you how often it needs doing on your elevation. A union that drips or a bracket that has let go is refixed on the day if you agree. A run that has sagged, rusted at its fixings or gone brittle is a replacement, and that is our fascias and guttering work, quoted on its own.
How it runs
From your call to a written price

One person to ring from the first visit to the last. The quote is itemised, not a figure on the back of a card: access, the length of run, the number of outlets and downpipes, any repair, and where the debris goes on separate lines, so you can compare it properly against anyone else's.
Nothing is left open or unusable overnight. The site is swept at the end of each day rather than the end of the job, and what comes out leaves with us. If something turns up once we start that nobody could have seen, you get a photograph and a price before we carry on.
Clearing a gutter is maintenance, so there is nothing to apply for. Swapping old cast iron for plastic is different if the house is in one of the two conservation areas that take in parts of Canford Cliffs, and the council keeps the list. A few buildings here are listed, St Ann's Hospital on Haven Road and All Saints' Church among them, and the Historic England list shows whether your own address is one.
Cost
What decides the price of a gutter clean
No rate per square metre, because a metre of gutter behind a conifer and a metre on an open gable are not the same metre.
Getting to it. A bungalow with one straight run, a detached house on a sloping plot with a valley and a gravel drive the tower has to stand on, and a block of flats with cars parked under the eaves are three different jobs, and a pine leaning over the back run can decide where the ladder goes. A bungalow run comes off a ladder or a pole, a three storey gable wants a tower, and a valley gutter between two roofs wants a proper platform. The work at height rules are why the access is a priced line rather than something absorbed into a rate.
What is in it, and how far it has travelled. Leaf litter lifts out in minutes. Moss washed off the tiles sets into a wet mat that has to be dug out, and silt in a long run behind a hedge is heavier and slower than anything a photograph shows. The number of outlets matters more than the length, because that is where it packs.
Whether it is a clean or a repair. A joint that drips once it is running again, a downpipe blocked at the shoe, a length of plastic that has sagged between brackets: none of that is clearing, and it is the part that decides whether you are booking an hour or half a day.
Comparing quotes? Ask whether the downpipes are being run through or just the gutter cleared, whether the outlets and hoppers are checked, whether it is a clear or a clear and a check for leaks, and who takes the debris away.
If it is overflowing now
Water coming over the gutter in heavy rain
Ring rather than use the form. Water running down a wall in a downpour soaks the brickwork and finds its way to a ceiling faster than most people expect, so a blocked outlet in a wet week goes to the front of the queue.
We clear it, run water through to prove it, and tell you honestly if what you actually have is a broken joint rather than a blockage. If the gutter belongs to a block, tell the managing agent as well, because the roof and the rainwater goods are the freeholder's responsibility, not yours. Scheduled work runs Monday to Friday, 8am to 6pm. For anything urgent, ring rather than use the form, and if we cannot pick up we ring you back as soon as we can.
Worth knowing
You may not be able to just cut the pine back
The obvious fix for a gutter that fills with needles is to take the overhanging branches off. In much of Canford Cliffs you cannot simply do that. Large parts of it sit inside the Branksome Park and Chine Gardens conservation area and the smaller Canford Cliffs Village one, and in a conservation area any tree much bigger than a sapling is protected.
Before anyone prunes or fells it, the council has to be given six weeks' written notice, and some trees here also carry their own preservation order, which means an application rather than a notice.
So plan the gutter around the tree, not the other way round. Check the council's conservation area and tree pages before you book a tree surgeon, and allow for the notice period. In the meantime the gutter under a protected Canford Cliffs pine needs clearing more often, and the elevation nearest it is the one to have looked at first. We will never cut or lop a branch to reach a gutter, and if a limb is resting on the roof we photograph it for you to send to the council or your arborist.

Questions
Questions about gutter cleaning in Canford Cliffs
How often should gutters under pines be cleared?
At least once a year, in late autumn once most of the needles are down. On the elevation right under a pine, a second clear in spring is usually worth it, because needles keep falling long after the leaves on other trees have finished.
Will you check the downpipes as well?
Yes. Every downpipe has water run through it, and one that will not clear is rodded or looked at with a camera. A gutter that is clean at the top and blocked at the shoe still overflows.
Do you make a mess of the garden?
The needles and silt go into bags at the ladder, not onto your beds, and paths and drives are swept before we leave. Everything we take out goes away with us.
Can you clear the gutters on our block of flats?
Yes. We quote the managing agent directly, list each run and outlet, and agree the date so residents can still get in and out and the cars can be moved from under the eaves.
How long does it take?
A bungalow is often a morning. A large detached house with valleys and a tower to move round, or a block with a dozen outlets, can be a full day. The quote says which.
