Gutter cleaning in Poole

A full gutter clean covers four things: the gutter emptied along its whole length, every outlet opened, every downpipe flushed and proved with water, and the joints watched while that water runs. The debris is bagged and leaves with us. Anything faulty is photographed and priced before anyone touches it.

Eaves runs on most Poole houses. Most homes in and around the town went up after the war, so the gutter is usually a plastic run on the eaves: uPVC half-round, square line on newer houses, and some aluminium. Inside you find leaf litter, moss washed off the tiles, grit shed by ageing concrete tiles and the black sludge they all turn into, silt packed at the outlets and now and then an old nest. It is scooped out by hand from a ladder, set up the way the HSE's ladder guidance describes, or with a gutter vacuum on reach poles from the ground where a pavement, a border or a steep drive makes a ladder pitch awkward.

Over a conservatory. The vacuum pole reaches across a conservatory or lean-to roof to the gutter behind it, so nobody stands on the glass or the polycarbonate and nothing leans on it. The conservatory's own gutter gets cleared from the garden on the same visit.

Downpipes and joints. Once the run is empty, we run water through every outlet. A downpipe that is backing up is rodded from the top or the shoe until it runs clear, and a camera goes down anything that still will not run. On plastic, the usual fault is a union that drips or starts to leak once water flows, because its rubber seal has perished or slipped. On the cast iron of the older town houses it is a cracked joint, rust along the back where nobody looks, and brackets rusted into the brickwork.

Parapet and box gutters, hoppers and valleys. On older Poole terraces the gutter is often a lined channel behind a low wall, draining to an outlet, a hopper head and sometimes a pipe inside the building. It cannot overflow outwards, so the silt stays. Clearing it means getting onto the roof properly, checking the outlet grate, and looking at the lining while it is empty, since a channel that has been ponding often has a split seam under the silt. A valley gutter between two slopes is cleared on the same visit.

When to book. Late autumn, after the leaves have dropped, is the main clear. Add a spring clear if trees overhang the roof, so the pattern is seasonal, and give parapet and box gutters an annual check whatever they look like from below. One thing moves the date. An active nest in a gutter, valley or parapet is protected by section 1 of the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981, gulls included, so it cannot be cleared until the young have gone. Book after the nesting season and before the winter storms.

Clean or repair. A loose bracket or a slipped union is photographed, priced and refixed on the day if you agree. The price of a gutter clean in Poole depends on height and access, the number of outlets and downpipes, and what is packed into the run. Length of gutter matters far less. A long open run on a gable clears quickly, while a short run under a conifer can take much longer.

Height and access. A bungalow gutter comes off a ladder or a pole from the ground. A two storey semi is usually ladder work, unless a conservatory sits under the back run and the vacuum pole is needed. A three storey terrace or a parapet gutter wants a tower, and a valley between two roofs needs a safe platform. That is set by the work at height rules, and it is priced as its own item.

What is in it. Dry leaves lift out fast. Moss off the tiles sets into a wet, heavy mat. Silt packs at the outlets, so the number of outlets and hoppers matters more than the metres.

Blocks and shared runs. A block of flats has long runs, several downpipes and cars parked underneath. Working round a car park and agreeing a date with a managing agent takes more planning than a house.

Is it worth paying for? Set a planned clear against what a blocked gutter causes: a wet wall, a rotting fascia board, damp rafter feet and, behind a parapet, a stained ceiling. The clear is the smaller job. If a joint drips or the gutter sags between brackets, that is a repair, and we price it separately.

Before you choose anyone, ask three things. Are the downpipes tested with water? Do you get photos of the cleared run and any fault? Who takes the waste away?

Poole's Old Town, inside the Town Centre Heritage conservation areas, keeps a stock of 18th-century merchant houses whose rainwater goods can be historic lead or cast iron. On those houses the hopper heads and downpipes are cleared, resealed and repainted. They are never cut out or swapped for plastic.

The Royal Commission's survey of Poole recorded several dated rainwater heads on houses of this kind, and on 87 High Street the 1704 building date appears on one. A head like that is part of the house. It is cleared by hand, the joint where it meets the downpipe is checked, and any repair is like for like. Changing rainwater goods on a frontage in a conservation area changes how it looks, so check the council's list of conservation areas first. On a listed building any alteration needs listed building consent, and the council's listed building records say which houses are listed. Clearing and repainting need neither.

These houses also hide their gutters. If the front wall carries on above the roof line and a hopper sits high on the wall, the gutter is a channel behind it, and it will not warn you before it fails. Have it checked every year and after any autumn gale. In a converted house, that call goes to the freeholder.
