Gutter cleaning in Hamworthy
Moss and debris dug out by hand, outlets and downpipes flushed through, and repairs priced separately before anything is fixed.
The site visit is free and so is the written itemised quote. Thomas Hannen prices every job himself.

In Hamworthy a gutter clean is mostly moss off concrete tiles, plus whatever the gulls have left in the outlets. We clear each run by hand, flush every downpipe through with water, and price anything that turns out to be a repair separately.
In Hamworthy the signs are usually plain to see. Water spills over the front of the gutter on the back of a semi or a bungalow and the brickwork below has gone green. A downpipe on a terrace has stopped taking water and next door's gutter is overflowing onto your side. Or a lump of moss and old nesting material is sitting in an outlet and you can see it from the garden.
If the overflow is already getting in, through a ceiling or round a window, ring 07435 839745 and tell us where it is showing. Otherwise Thomas comes out, looks along each run, and puts a written price together.
The work
Moss, terraces and long bungalow runs

Moss off the tiles. Much of Hamworthy was built in the sixties and seventies, and a lot of those roofs are concrete interlocking tiles. Concrete holds moss far more readily than clay, and every heavy shower washes clumps of it down into the gutter, where it sets into a wet, heavy sludge with the grit off the tiles.
We dig that out by hand, scrape the silt off the bottom so the run has its proper fall again, and bag it at the ladder so none of it goes on your path. If the roof itself is carrying a thick coat of moss, we tell you, because the gutter will fill again quickly until the tiles are dealt with.
Bungalows. There are a good many bungalows in Hamworthy, and their gutters take the water off the whole roof at one low level. That makes them quick to reach, often with a vacuum on a reach pole from the ground where a border or a greenhouse makes a ladder awkward. It also means a long run carries a lot of water, so outlets block faster than people expect.
Terraces with a shared gutter. On a Hamworthy terrace the gutter is one run crossing several houses, and water does not stop at the boundary. If the outlet it drains to is on next door's side and it is blocked, your length fills up and overflows even though it is clean. We clear to the outlet, which sometimes means asking your neighbour, and it is often cheaper for two or three houses in a row to book the same visit.
Downpipes and gullies. Every downpipe gets water run through it while you watch. One that will not clear is rodded, and if it still backs up we put a camera down to see whether the blockage is in the pipe or the drain below. A gully full of silt at the shoe is cleared as part of the job.
Blocks and flats. The blocks near the quays and on the estates are booked through whoever manages them. We quote run by run, work round the parking, and report what we found.
Repairs, and what is not a clean. A union dripping at a perished seal or a loose bracket is refixed on the day if you agree. A run that sags between brackets, or old plastic that has gone brittle, needs replacing, and that is our fascia and guttering side, priced on its own.
How it runs
From your call to a written price

One person to ring from the first visit to the last. The quote is itemised, not a figure on the back of a card: access, the length of run, the number of outlets and downpipes, any repair, and where the debris goes on separate lines, so you can compare it properly against anyone else's.
Nothing is left open or unusable overnight. The site is swept at the end of each day rather than the end of the job, and what comes out leaves with us. If something turns up once we start that nobody could have seen, you get a photograph and a price before we carry on.
Clearing gutters is maintenance and needs no permission. None of BCP Council's conservation areas takes in Hamworthy, though a handful of older buildings here are listed, The Old Rectory among them, and on one of those a change to the rainwater goods needs consent: the council keeps the list of both.
Cost
What decides the price of a gutter clean
No rate per square metre, because a metre of gutter behind a conifer and a metre on an open gable are not the same metre.
Getting to it. A bungalow in Lake with one straight run, a terrace where the outlet is two doors along, and a three storey block by Carter's Quay with cars parked under the eaves all take different kit and different amounts of time. A bungalow run comes off a ladder or a pole, a three storey gable wants a tower, and a valley gutter between two roofs wants a proper platform. The work at height rules are why the access is a priced line rather than something absorbed into a rate.
What is in it, and how far it has travelled. Leaf litter lifts out in minutes. Moss washed off the tiles sets into a wet mat that has to be dug out, and silt in a long run behind a hedge is heavier and slower than anything a photograph shows. The number of outlets matters more than the length, because that is where it packs.
Whether it is a clean or a repair. A joint that drips once it is running again, a downpipe blocked at the shoe, a length of plastic that has sagged between brackets: none of that is clearing, and it is the part that decides whether you are booking an hour or half a day.
Comparing quotes? Ask whether the downpipes are being run through or just the gutter cleared, whether the outlets and hoppers are checked, whether it is a clear or a clear and a check for leaks, and who takes the debris away.
If it is overflowing now
Water coming over the gutter in heavy rain
Ring rather than use the form. Water running down a wall in a downpour soaks the brickwork and finds its way to a ceiling faster than most people expect.
We clear it, run water through to prove it, and tell you honestly if what you actually have is a broken joint rather than a blockage. If a gull's nest is blocking the outlet, do not climb up and pull it out yourself: tell us when you ring, because what can be done depends on whether it is still in use. Scheduled work runs Monday to Friday, 8am to 6pm. For anything urgent, ring rather than use the form, and if we cannot pick up we ring you back as soon as we can.
Worth knowing
Book around the gulls, not in the middle of them
Hamworthy sits right on Poole Harbour, with the ferry port, the quays and the water on three sides, and gulls nest on rooftops all round it. A flat roof, a wide valley or the corner of a gutter near a chimney makes a good nest site, and nesting material, droppings and scraps end up packed in the outlets.
Once gulls start building, the nest is protected by law while it is being built or in use, and it cannot simply be lifted out of the gutter to make the water run.
So timing matters in Hamworthy more than in most places. Have the gutters and the outlets cleared in late winter or early spring, before the gulls settle, and again in the autumn once the young have gone and the leaves are down. A clean, free-draining gutter is also less attractive as a nest site. If a pair has already moved in, we will look from a distance, tell you honestly what can and cannot be done until they leave, and deal with any overflow without touching the nest.

Planning at a glance
Do you need planning permission in Hamworthy?
Most repairs in Hamworthy need no application at all. What decides whether a change to the outside of your house does is who the council is, whether a conservation area or a listing applies, and whether the place sits in a protected landscape.

Questions
Questions about gutter cleaning in Hamworthy
How often should I have my gutters cleaned?
Once a year suits most houses, in the autumn after the leaves. A roof with a lot of moss, or one where gulls nest nearby, is worth a second clear in early spring.
Our terrace shares a gutter. Can you do just my part?
We can, but if the outlet is on a neighbour's section and it is blocked, your length will keep filling. Clearing through to the outlet is the job that actually works, and neighbours often share the visit.
Do you test the downpipes?
Yes. Every downpipe has water run through it, and one that will not clear is rodded or looked at with a camera before we leave.
Do I need to be at home?
Not if we can get to all sides of the house. We can send photographs of the gutters before and after, and anything we found that needs repair comes with a separate price.
