Exterior cleaning in Hamworthy is mostly render, pebbledash, concrete tile roofs and block paved drives on post-war houses and bungalows. Each surface gets the pressure it can take and a biocide where something is growing, and the wash water is kept out of the road drains, which run to the harbour.

In Hamworthy a clean usually makes sense in one of these situations. A semi or a bungalow where the render or pebbledash has gone green on the side that never sees the sun. A block paved drive or a back path that has turned black and slippery, often with weeds coming up through every joint. And a landlord, or a family clearing a parent's house, with a sale or a new tenant coming and a date to hit.

We look at each surface, tell you the method for each one, and put it in a written quote with a line per surface. If something is past cleaning, such as blown render or a roof that wants more than moss taking off it, we say so instead of washing it and leave you to find out.

The work

Sixties semis, bungalow roofs and block paving

Walls. A lot of the housing in Hamworthy went up in the sixties and seventies, and much of it is brick with render or pebbledash on part or all of it. Painted render takes a soft wash: low pressure through a wide nozzle and a biocide that kills the algae in the surface, not just the green on top.

Pebbledash needs care, because a jet held close blows the stones off an older dash and leaves bald patches that show for good. Plain facing brick on the older houses nearer the bridge is softer than it looks, so we test a panel out of sight first and keep the lance back so the face stays on and the mortar stays in the joints.

Roofs. Concrete interlocking tile is the usual covering on Hamworthy's post-war semis and bungalows. Moss packs into the channels and laps of those tiles and pushes water sideways instead of down. We scrape it out by hand, brush the ridge, and treat the slope so the spores left in the surface die off instead of regrowing. A bungalow roof is often reachable from the ground with poles, which keeps the cost down. We do not pressure wash roofs; our roof cleaning page explains why the force does more harm than the moss.

Drives and paths. Block paving on the front, slabs or concrete round the back. Block paving comes up well under controlled pressure, but the wash takes the jointing sand out with the weeds and the black spot, so it gets re-sanded, or the weeds are back by spring. A concrete path is quick. A path down the side of a semi that never dries is the one that goes slippery, and it gets a treatment as well as a wash. Whether a seal is worth it on the drive is a fair question, and the answer is often no.

Gutters and flat roofs. Garages and back extensions here often have a flat roof that holds moss and sheds it into the gutter. Clearing the gutters in Hamworthy and the downpipe outlets before the walls are washed stops the next shower streaking them again.

When we would talk you out of it. A clean shows up everything that was hidden under the green. If render is hollow or cracked, it is worth knowing before a wash, not after, and rendering in Hamworthy covers that side of it.

How it runs

From your call to a written price

One person to ring from the first visit to the last. The quote is itemised, not a figure on the back of a card: the method for each surface, protection, access, and where the water and residue go on separate lines, so you can compare it properly against anyone else's.

Nothing is left open or unusable overnight. The site is swept at the end of each day rather than the end of the job, and what comes out leaves with us. If something turns up once we start that nobody could have seen, you get a photograph and a price before we carry on.

Cleaning is upkeep and needs no consent. Hamworthy has no conservation area of its own, but it does have a handful of listed buildings, some of them on Blandford Road, and on one of those painting or coating a wall needs listed building consent from BCP Council first.

Cost

What decides the price of a clean

No rate per square metre, because the same square metre can be twenty minutes or two, depending what is growing on it.

Getting to it. A bungalow off the pavement, a sixties semi with a shared side path and a harbour side block with parking underneath each need a different set up. Ground level off a lance is one thing, a second storey or a roof slope is another. Reach poles do a lot of it, some of it wants a tower, and the work at height rules decide which.

The surface decides the method. Render, painted masonry, old brick, block paving and a tiled roof all want different pressure, and some want no pressure at all. Getting that wrong takes the surface off with the dirt, which is the expensive kind of clean.

How bad it has actually got. A light film comes off quickly. Years of organic growth needs treating, and often needs a second visit rather than more pressure.

Comparing quotes? Ask what method is being used on each surface, whether any treatment is included or just a rinse, whether a second visit is part of it, and where the run off is going. Without a treatment line, a rinse can pass for a clean.

If there is a date

A viewing, a visit or a deadline

Ring rather than use the form. This is not emergency work, but it is often work with a date on it: a property going on the market, a letting inspection, a visit, or scaffolding coming down.

Tell us the date when you ring and we will tell you honestly whether it can be done properly by then, rather than book it and rush it. A mossy slope down to a back door is the usual thing that cannot wait, and that part can be treated on the first visit. Scheduled work runs Monday to Friday, 8am to 6pm. For anything urgent, ring rather than use the form, and if we cannot pick up we ring you back as soon as we can.

Hamworthy's drains run to the harbour

Hamworthy sits on a neck of land with Holes Bay on one side and Poole Harbour on the other, and Ham Common running down to the water in the west.

The gully at the edge of your road is almost certainly a surface water drain, not a sewer, and it runs to that water with no treatment on the way. Poole Harbour is a protected site for its birds and wildlife. Whatever goes into the gully during a clean, moss, grit, biocide or detergent, ends up in it.

So on a Hamworthy job, where the water goes is planned before the lance comes out. Road gullies next to the work are covered. A drive that falls to the road has the wash swept back and collected, and the moss and grit are screened out and bagged. Biocide goes on at the strength on the label and is left to work, rather than hosed off into the kerb. It is also why we would ask you not to tackle a drive yourself with bleach that runs into the road. If you are comparing cleaners, ask each one where their run off goes. The government's pollution prevention guidance is clear that it should not be the surface water drain.

Questions

Questions about exterior cleaning in Hamworthy

Can you clean pebbledash without knocking the stones off?

Yes, if it is sound. It is a soft wash with a biocide, with the lance held well back. Where the dash is already loose or hollow we will show you before we start, because no clean can hold on a stone that has let go.

Do you re-sand a block paved drive after cleaning it?

Yes, it is part of the job and it is on the quote. The clean takes the old jointing sand out, and paving left without it moves and grows weeds again quickly.

Can you do the roof on a bungalow?

Usually from the ground with poles, which is quicker and cheaper than a tower. Moss is scraped out of the tiles by hand and the roof is treated. It is never pressure washed.

I rent the house out. Can you work to a tenancy date?

Tell us the date when you ring. We will say honestly whether it can be done properly by then, and we can arrange access with the tenant or the agent.

Where does the water go while you are cleaning?

Not into the road gully: gullies near the work are covered, the wash is collected, and moss and grit are bagged and taken away. The drains here run to the harbour.
