Rendering in Hamworthy is mostly repair and renewal on houses from the late sixties and seventies: render panels and gables that have cracked or gone green, and dash that has parted from the wall. We tap the elevation, find out how much is loose, and price the right system in writing. For inside walls, see plastering in Hamworthy.
Hamworthy render usually shows trouble at a window, a gable or a hollow patch. A crack running from the corner of a window that comes back every time it is filled. A gable facing the water that has gone green and streaky and no longer looks clean after a wash. Or a patch of render that sounds dull when you knock it, sometimes with a piece already lying on the path.
None of those is cosmetic. Render is the coat that keeps wind-driven rain out of the wall, and on a peninsula with water on three sides the wall gets a lot of it. We come out, tap the whole elevation, chalk up the hollow areas so you can see them, and tell you plainly whether it wants patching, a clean and a coating, or a new system. The visit and the written quote are both free.
The work
What render on a Hamworthy house usually needs

Tapping it comes first. Every Hamworthy quote starts with a mallet. Sound render rings, blown render gives a dull knock. On a house of this age the render is often a panel under the windows, a gable end or the ground floor only, with brick or tile hanging above, so the job can be a morning on a panel or a week on an elevation. We find that out before anyone talks about a system.
Cracks and patch repairs. Hairline crazing in old sand and cement is usually cosmetic. A crack you can get a coin into is letting water behind the render, and the frost does the rest. We cut it back to a firm edge, form a key, and patch in matching sand and cement, then deal with why it cracked, which on these houses is often a lintel, a window frame or the joint where an extension meets the original wall. Where that joint keeps moving, a movement bead does more good than more filler.
Hacking off and re-rendering. When a panel or an elevation is hollow across most of its area, patching is money wasted. The old render comes off back to the blockwork or brick, the background is brushed down, stabilised with a primer where it is friable, and given a key. Then a scratch coat and a floating coat in sand and cement, or a mesh-reinforced basecoat ready for a modern topcoat. Beads go on at the corners and reveals, and a bellcast bead above the damp course so water drips clear instead of wicking back up.
Silicone thin coat and monocouche. A silicone topcoat over a basecoat with scrim in it sheds water and stays cleaner for longer, which matters on a wall that faces the harbour. Monocouche is through-coloured and scraped back, so the colour is in the material rather than on it. We put a sample on your wall before ordering, because a colour chart and a north-facing gable are two different things. Newer houses and flats with a monocouche that has gone green usually want a clean down and a breathable coating, not a new render.
Pebbledash and Tyrolean. Both can be repaired. New dash beside old will not match in colour for years, so where a patch would show from the road we would rather do the whole elevation and tell you that up front.
The older houses. Only a small share of Hamworthy was built before the First World War, and some of it is stucco, like the listed mid-Victorian terrace at 5 to 11 Blandford Road. Walls of that age are solid and need to breathe. A hard cement patch on old stucco traps moisture, pushes the damp inside and lets go at the edges, so on those we use lime or a breathable system, and a listed front needs consent before anything changes.
External wall insulation. Most houses in Hamworthy are cavity built. If the cavity has never been filled, that is usually the cheaper first step, and we would talk you out of external wall insulation until it has been looked at. On a solid wall that is coming back to brick anyway, EWI boards under the render are worth pricing on the same scaffold, and Approved Document L sets the thermal standard it has to meet.
How it runs
From your call to a written price

One person to ring from the first visit to the last. The quote is itemised, not a figure on the back of a card: access and scaffold, protection, preparation of the existing wall, the system and number of coats, beads and stop ends, and making good on separate lines, so you can compare it properly against anyone else's.
Nothing is left open or unusable overnight. The site is swept at the end of each day, not the end of the job, and what comes out leaves with us. If something turns up once we start that nobody could have seen, you get a photograph and a price before we carry on.
Putting back render like for like is maintenance with no application. Changing the look, such as smooth render in place of dash or rendering over brick, is covered in the Planning Portal guidance on external walls, and on a block of flats the freeholder signs it off first. No conservation area covers Hamworthy, though the council keeps the list, and the handful of listed buildings here need their own consent.
Cost
What decides the price of a rendering job
No rate per square metre, because the square metres are the easy part; what is already on the wall decides the price.
Getting to it. A bungalow in Lake, a three-storey block of flats near Carter's Quay and a semi on Turlin Moor with a shared path at the side need three different platforms. A bungalow gable comes off a tower, a three storey elevation wants a scaffold, and the platform has to stand for the whole system rather than a day. The work at height rules are why it is a priced line rather than something folded into a rate.
What is already on the wall. Rendering over sound brick is one job. Hacking off blown sand and cement, or a pebbledash that has parted from the background, is another, and it is the part nobody can see from the road. We tap the whole elevation before quoting, because the hollow areas set the hours.
The system, and what the wall behind it needs. Silicone thin coat over insulation, monocouche through-coloured, or traditional sand and cement all price differently and behave differently. On a solid wall that has to breathe, a plastic-rich modern system traps moisture and moves the problem inside, so the right system is a wall decision rather than a colour decision.
Comparing quotes for a Hamworthy render? Ask which system is being quoted and how many coats, whether the old render is being hacked off or overlaid, whether beads, bellcast and stop ends are included, whether the scaffold is in the price, and what happens to the existing sills and pipework.
If it has started to come away
Render that has blown or cracked open
Ring rather than use the form. A section that sounds hollow when you tap it, or a crack you can get a coin into, is letting water behind the render and the frost does the rest.
We make the loose area of a Hamworthy wall safe, sheet it if the weather is against us, and price the elevation once we can see how far the blown area actually goes. If you are in a flat, tell the managing agent the same day, because the permanent repair is theirs to instruct. Scheduled work runs Monday to Friday, 8am to 6pm. For anything urgent, ring rather than use the form, and if we cannot pick up we ring you back as soon as we can.
Worth knowing
Water on three sides, and what it does to render
Hamworthy is a peninsula. Poole Harbour is to the south, Holes Bay to the east and Lytchett Bay to the west, so a lot of walls here face open water with nothing to break the wind. Rain arrives sideways, carrying salt, and it finds every open joint, every crack and every bead that has rusted. That is why a gable facing the water fails years before the sheltered side of the same house.
It changes the system, the detail and the timing. The system: on an exposed wall we assess it against BS 8104, the standard for wind-driven rain, and specify a render rated for that exposure, with stainless or PVC beads that will not rust in salt air. The detail: a bellcast drip, sills that throw water clear and sealed junctions around pipes and frames. And the timing: a drying wind off the harbour pulls water out of a fresh basecoat too fast, so on a blowy day we shade and damp it, or wait. A render that cures properly lasts. One that dries in an afternoon crazes.

Questions
Questions about rendering in Hamworthy
Can you just patch the bad bit?
Often, yes. If the tap test shows most of the elevation is sound, we cut out the hollow areas and patch them. If it is hollow across most of the wall, patching only moves the problem along, and we show you where the hollow areas are before we recommend anything.
How long does re-rendering a wall take?
A panel under a window can be a day. A full elevation with hacking off, a basecoat and a topcoat usually runs over a week or more, because each coat needs time to cure before the next goes on.
Is the scaffold included in the price?
Yes, as its own line on the itemised quote, so you can compare it. A single-storey bungalow wall often only needs a tower.
Do you render in winter?
Not when frost is forecast, because render that freezes before it cures fails. We plan the coats around the weather and tell you if a job is better started in spring.
My house faces the harbour. Does that change the render?
It can. An exposed wall wants a system rated for driving rain, rust-proof beads and a proper drip detail. We check which way the wall faces and what it takes from the weather before we specify.
