Bricklaying in Mudeford is mostly garden and boundary walls, porches and small extensions on 1970s and early 1980s houses and bungalows, plus repairs to older brickwork nearer the quay. We look at the wall, tell you whether it needs repair or rebuilding, and price it in writing.
The usual faults in Mudeford are a front garden wall that has started to lean towards the pavement, a brick pier by the gate cracked through by a hinge or a car, or a coping that the frost and salt have pushed off. Some people want a new wall to screen a garden from the wind off the harbour, or a porch built onto a bungalow.
We come and look, check the footing where we can, and tell you straight whether it is a repair or a rebuild. For worn mortar joints on their own, see our repointing in Mudeford page.
The brickwork
Walls, piers, porches and chimneys

Garden and boundary walls. Most garden walls in Mudeford are a single brick thick, on a shallow footing, with a coping on top. When one leans or bows, the cause is usually roots, a footing that was never deep enough, or a wall holding back more soil than it was built for.
A short section that has gone out of line is taken down, the bricks are cleaned, and it is rebuilt on a proper concrete footing with the new courses tied back to the old. A retaining wall gets a thicker build and drainage behind it.
Piers and copings. A gate pier takes the swing of a gate and the knock of the odd car. We rebuild a cracked pier around a new core where needed, and replace blown copings with a brick on edge or a coping stone bedded on a damp proof course, so water stops soaking down into the wall.
Porches, extensions and new walls. A porch on a Mudeford bungalow or a small extension is cavity work: blockwork inner leaf, facing brick outside, wall ties across the cavity, a lintel over each opening, a cavity tray where it meets the house and a DPC at the right height. We match the bond and the brick to the house, and building control applies.
Cracks and cut out repairs. Spalling bricks, where the face has broken away, are cut out one at a time and replaced with a matching or reclaimed brick. A stepped crack in the brickwork is investigated before anything is filled, because the cause matters more than the crack.
Chimneys. A chimney that has lost its flaunching, or has bricks shaling off near the top, is rebuilt from the roof line on a scaffold, with the lead flashing redone in the same visit.
Matching. New brick next to old never looks right on day one. We bring samples to the house, and on a long wall we build a small trial panel so you can see the colour and the mortar joint before the rest goes up.
When we would talk you out of it. A wall with worn joints and sound bricks needs repointing, not rebuilding. We say so.
How it runs
From your call to a written price
One person to ring from the first visit to the last. The quote is itemised, not a figure on the back of a card: access, raking out, the mortar mix, the area of each elevation, any brick replacement and disposal on separate lines, so you can compare it properly against anyone else's.
Nothing on a Mudeford job is left open or unusable overnight. The site is swept at the end of each day rather than the end of the job, and what comes out leaves with us. If something turns up once we start that nobody could have seen, you get a photograph and a price before we carry on.
A garden wall up to a metre high beside a road, or two metres elsewhere, is usually permitted development. Inside the Mudeford Quay conservation area, demolishing or altering a boundary wall can need consent, so check against the council keeps the list before a wall there comes down.
Cost
What decides the price of a brickwork job

No rate per square metre, because the metre of wall tells you almost nothing until you know what the joints are like.
Getting to it. A low front wall on a Mudeford open plan close, a long side wall behind a hedge, and a wall on a busy road where the pavement has to be kept safe all take different set up. A chimney or a gable wants a scaffold, a garden wall wants nothing. How long the platform stands matters as much as its size, and the work at height rules are why it is a priced line rather than an optional extra.
The joints, not the wall. Raking out by hand is slow and is the only safe way on soft old brick. How deep the joints have to come out, and whether the brick faces have already spalled, decides the hours more than the area does.
The mix, and matching. Matching an existing mortar for colour, texture and strength takes trial panels. Matching a brick means sourcing it. Neither is a line most quotes make visible, and both are why two prices for the same wall can be so far apart.
Comparing quotes? Ask how deep the joints are being raked and by hand or by disc, what the mortar mix is and whether it has been matched, how many bricks are being replaced, and whether the scaffold is included. Set the answers side by side before you set the prices side by side.
If something has moved
Loose brickwork, or a wall that has shifted

Ring rather than use the form. Anything overhead or leaning goes to the front of the queue: a chimney with movement in it, a parapet, a garden wall pushed out by roots or a vehicle.
The first visit is about making it safe and stable, and we quote the permanent repair once we can see how far the movement goes. If a wall is leaning over a pavement or a path, fence it off and keep children away from it until we have looked. Scheduled work runs Monday to Friday, 8am to 6pm. For anything urgent, ring rather than use the form, and if we cannot pick up we ring you back as soon as we can.
Worth knowing
Some of the walls are listed in their own right

Near the quay, some of the boundary walls are not just old: they are listed buildings on their own entry. The Historic England list includes the street boundary walls at Scotts Cottage and at The Anchorage, and the gate piers and boundary wall at Sandhills.
On a listed wall, or on the wall of a listed house, almost any repair beyond like-for-like needs listed building consent, and taking down and rebuilding without it is an offence even when the wall is falling down.
So if your wall is near the quay in Mudeford, find out first whether it is listed, using the council's listed building records. If it is, a repair means reusing the original bricks wherever they are sound, matching any replacement to them, and a soft lime mortar rather than a hard cement one. We will photograph the wall, set out what we would do, and give you that in writing for the council, so the work can go ahead with the right consent.

Most repairs in Mudeford need no application at all. What decides whether a change to the outside of your house does is who the council is, whether a conservation area or a listing applies, and whether the place sits in a protected landscape.

Questions
Questions about bricklaying in Mudeford
My garden wall is leaning. Can it be saved?
Sometimes a short section can be taken down and rebuilt on a new footing, reusing the bricks. If the whole wall has moved, rebuilding it properly is better value. We tell you which after looking at the footing.
Can you match my existing bricks?
Usually closely: we bring samples, and on a longer wall we build a trial panel so you can see the brick and the mortar before we carry on.
How long does a new garden wall take?
A typical front wall is two or three days, including the footing. The mortar needs a few days to cure before any gate is hung on a pier.
Do I need permission for a wall near Mudeford Quay?
Like-for-like repair is maintenance. Demolishing or altering a wall in the conservation area, or any work on a listed wall, needs checking with BCP Council first.
