Insulation in Mudeford
Lofts, walls and floors in Mudeford's seventies and eighties homes, done in the order that saves the most, BH23.
The site visit is free and so is the written itemised quote. Thomas Hannen prices every job himself.

Mudeford's seventies and early eighties bungalows and houses went up with a thin blanket in the roof and empty cavities, so the order is usually clear: the loft, then the walls, then a suspended floor if there is one. Thomas looks at the whole house, tells you the order that makes sense, and price it in writing. The detail is on loft insulation and wall insulation for Mudeford.
Mudeford bungalows, newly bought houses and mouldy rooms all raise the insulation question. A bungalow that never feels warm however long the heating runs, and a heating bill that keeps going up. A house just bought with an EPC that lists half a dozen recommendations and no idea which matter. Or a room with black mould in the corners every winter.
Thomas climbs into the loft, drills a borescope hole in the wall that faces the sea, lifts a floorboard where he can, and writes a free itemised quote that puts each job in the order he would do it.
The work
The roof first, then walls, then the draughts

Lofts. The cheapest heat to save is the heat going through the ceiling. A Mudeford loft from this era often has a thin, compressed blanket between the joists, if that. We top it up with mineral wool roll laid between and over the joists, cross laid, to around 270mm, which gets a ceiling to a U-value of 0.16.
Every bay at the eaves gets a vent tray so the roof still breathes, cables are lifted clear, and the tank and its pipes are lagged. On a Mudeford bungalow the eaves run round all four sides, so that edge work is most of the day. The hatch gets a board and a seal, and storage goes on a small deck raised on legs over the new depth.
Dormer bungalows. Many Mudeford bungalows have been extended into the roof with a flat-roofed dormer and a bedroom under the slopes. With no loft floor to lay onto, Celotex or similar PIR board is fitted in and below the rafters, an air gap left under the felt, and a vapour control layer fixed before the new plasterboard, aiming at 0.18. A multi-layer foil on its own rarely gets near that.
Cavity walls. Mudeford houses of this age were almost all built with a cavity, and a good many were left empty. A borescope through a mortar joint shows whether it is clear, filled already, or full of rubble. Whoever does a cavity fill should be registered for cavity work and leave you the paperwork for it. Before anyone drills, we check the things that make a fill fail: cracked render, bad pointing, leaking gutters and blocked air bricks.
Internal and external wall insulation. Where a cavity should not be filled, a cold room can be lined inside with insulated plasterboard, or a whole house wrapped outside with EWI and a new render when it is being re-rendered anyway.
The older cottages by the quay. Near Mudeford Quay the walls are older soft brick in lime mortar, with no cavity, and some of these buildings are listed. They need breathable insulation, wood fibre or mineral wool finished in lime, never a sealed foam board that traps salt and damp in the wall. Anything that changes how the outside looks, inside the conservation area or on a listed building, is checked with the council first.
Floors and draughts. A suspended timber floor in Mudeford loses heat through the gaps. Insulation held between the joists from below, and sealing round skirtings and pipes, make a room feel warmer quickly. We keep the air bricks clear so the void stays ventilated.
Condensation. Insulating a house makes it tighter. Extract fans, trickle vents and clear air bricks keep the damp moving out, or the mould moves to the next cold spot.
How it runs
From your call to a written price
One person to ring from the first visit to the last. The quote is itemised, not a figure on the back of a card: the survey, clearing what is there, the material and its depth, ventilation works and disposal on separate lines, so you can compare it properly against anyone else's.
Nothing in a Mudeford house is left open or unusable overnight. The site is swept at the end of each day rather than the end of the job, and what comes out leaves with us. If something turns up once we start that nobody could have seen, you get a photograph and a price before we carry on.
Most insulation is not development and needs no planning permission, as the Planning Portal guidance on insulation confirms; external wall insulation can, and Approved Document L sets the standard. Renovating more than half of a wall, floor or roof brings in building control under Regulation 23. We are not VAT registered, so there is no VAT on our quote; registered firms zero rate insulation fitted in a home until 31 March 2027, under HMRC VAT Notice 708/6.
Cost
What decides the price of an insulation job

No rate per square metre, because the area is the easy part and the awkward part is everything around it.
Getting to it. A bungalow loft with low eaves all round, a three storey town house with a small loft and a lot of wall, and a flat where only the walls and windows are yours cannot sensibly be priced as one job. A loft hatch you can stand a ladder under is one job, a crawl space or a room in the roof is another. Where boarding has to come up and go back, that is time before any material is laid.
What is already up there. Old material that has to come out, and be bagged and taken away, is a cost before anything new goes down. So is anything stored in the loft that has to be moved and put back.
Ventilation and the awkward edges. Eaves that must stay clear, downlighters that need covers, a tank and pipework that still need lagging, and getting depth right into the corners rather than just across the middle. Approved Document L sets what the work is expected to reach.
Comparing quotes? Ask what depth is actually being laid, whether the old material is being removed or covered, whether the eaves are being kept clear, and whether the hatch and the pipework are included.
If it is urgent
Damp, condensation or a room you cannot heat

Ring rather than use the form. Insulation is rarely an emergency, but a loft dripping with condensation, black mould coming back faster than you can wash it off, or a room that will not hold heat before a cold snap all get looked at quickly.
The first visit is about finding out whether the problem is insulation, ventilation or both, because insulating a roof space that cannot breathe makes it worse. If black mould is spreading in a bedroom corner, wipe it down with a mould cleaner, open the trickle vents, and tell us which wall it is on when you ring. Scheduled work runs Monday to Friday, 8am to 6pm. For anything urgent, ring rather than use the form, and if we cannot pick up we ring you back as soon as we can.
The one local thing
Built just before the rules tightened

Most of Mudeford went up in a short run of years in the seventies and early eighties. That is just before the insulation standards for new homes were raised sharply, so a house from that run was usually built with a thin blanket in the loft and an empty cavity in the walls. Because so many houses here are the same age, the gaps tend to be the same too, and the order of work is usually clear.
Start with the loft, because it is quick, cheap for what it saves, and needs no scaffold. Then look at the walls, with a borescope before any promise about a fill, since a house built as a pair with next door may already have had its cavity filled on one side and not the other. Floors come last. In a bungalow, where every room sits under the loft, the loft alone often makes the biggest difference you will feel, and your EPC should move with it.

Questions
Questions about insulation in Mudeford
What should I insulate first?
Almost always the loft. It is quick, needs no scaffold, and in a bungalow it covers every room. Walls and floors come after.
Will you add VAT?
No, we are not VAT registered, so none is added. Firms that are registered charge insulation fitted in a home at zero rate until 31 March 2027.
Who should fill my cavity wall?
An installer registered for cavity wall work, who leaves you the paperwork for it. We check the wall first and fix anything that would make a fill fail.
Will insulating cause condensation?
Not if ventilation is kept. We keep the eaves open, check the extract fans and trickle vents, and leave air bricks clear.
