Nearly every drive we are called to around Minstead is gravel over ground that holds water, and what has gone wrong is the base and the edge rather than the stone on top. We dig a trial hole at the site visit and tell you which of those it is before anyone talks about a new surface.
Three sorts of call come out of the village. The gravel has thinned to bare ground in the wheel tracks and the rest of it has crept out onto the verge. The track that serves two or three houses has potholed again after a wet winter, and nobody wants to keep tipping stone into the same holes. Or the terrace behind an old cottage has settled towards the house, so rain now sits against the wall instead of running away from it.
We come out, take the levels, dig where the wheels actually stand, and put a written price together afterwards. The excavation, the muck away, the sub-base, the edgings, the drainage and the surface each sit on their own line, so you can see what you are paying for and question any part of it. The work
Gravel, forest tracks and cottage terraces
Gravel drives that stay where you put them. Gravel is the right surface for most houses here and it fails for the same two reasons every time: nothing is holding the edge, and there is no proper sub-base under it. Done properly it is a dig to firm formation, a geotextile membrane so stone and soil never mix, a compacted sub-base at a depth that suits the ground, then angular gravel that keys into itself rather than pea shingle that rolls away. The edge gets a haunched kerb or a steel or timber restraint, and anything with a fall gets a cellular grid so the stone cannot migrate down into the lane.
A track that has potholed does not need a new surface, it needs its shape back: scrape off the loose material, re-profile a camber so water runs to the sides instead of standing in the ruts, then put a proper depth of stone back and compact it in layers. Then give the water somewhere to leave at intervals, a cross-drain into a ditch or a channel drain at a gateway. The ground here drains poorly, so a soakaway wants a percolation test before it is drawn rather than an assumption. Where a track is shared, we price it so several households can look at the same itemised figure.
There is often no kerb to drop. Plenty of frontages open straight onto a lane with a verge and no footway, so there is no dropped kerb to apply for. What there is instead is the question of who owns the verge you would be crossing, and that is worth settling before anyone quotes. The first couple of metres in off the lane take the worst of the turning, so that part gets extra depth and a firm apron, or you drag mud out onto the road every time you leave.
At the old cottages, natural stone and porcelain both go on a full mortar bed rather than five dabs, with the pointing worked properly so it does not wash out in the first winter. The finished level stays well below the damp proof course, and where a threshold is already low we take the water off in a channel drain and leave a gravel margin against the wall. We will talk you out of resin or tarmac over a track that still moves, and out of block paving under deep shade, which greens over and turns slippery within a couple of years.

On permission. Relaying what is already there is maintenance and needs nothing. New hard surfacing at the front over five square metres that sheds its water onto the road needs planning permission, and the Planning Portal sets out that test. Gravel, or a fall taken to a border or a tested soakaway, keeps it permitted development. Who decides is the difference: the application goes to the New Forest National Park Authority, and its property map will tell you what covers your address. The village sits in the Forest Central (South) conservation area, where appearance is controlled.

What decides the price of a driveway
Access is the first number on a job out here. A cottage sitting almost on the lane, a house at the end of a long unmade track and a modern place with a wide gravelled frontage are three different jobs before a stone moves, because access decides whether a machine and a grab lorry do the work or it all goes out by barrow and skip. After that it is the ground: how deep the dig has to be, and where the water is lawfully allowed to go on land that drains this poorly. Ask for the dig depth and the drainage on separate lines.

A trip hazard, or a drive that floods
Ring rather than use the form. A lifted slab, a sunken bay by a doorway or a gully that has stopped taking water will not wait. Around here it is usually a track scoured into a channel that now sends water at somebody's threshold, or a slab lifted on the path people use in the dark. We make it safe first, then price the rest. Worth knowing
The trees are protected here, and a drive is what usually kills one
Minstead sits inside the Forest Central (South) conservation area, and the part of that which lands on driveway work is not the paving, it is the trees. In a conservation area you have to give notice before a tree of any size is felled, lopped or topped, and a tree already carrying a preservation order needs consent for work near it as well as to it. The National Park sets out how heritage and conservation work here.
Digging a drive does not look like tree work, but cutting through roots or compacting the ground over them does the same damage more slowly, and the tree dies two summers later when nobody connects the two.
The practical version is to find out what is protected before the design is fixed rather than after. Where a mature oak or beech sits close to the run, the answer is usually to keep the build-up shallow inside the root area, use a no-dig cellular system laid on the surface instead of a deep excavation, and take the water into a permeable margin the tree can actually use.
That costs a little more than digging straight through it, and considerably less than losing a mature tree and having to explain it. We will tell you at the visit which trees are going to shape the job, and where it is not obvious whether one is protected, the National Park Authority will confirm it.

Does the conservation area cover gravel and paving as well?
Appearance is controlled inside Forest Central (South), and the New Forest National Park Authority is the body deciding. Putting back what is already there counts as maintenance. Changing the material, the colour or the extent of a hard surface, particularly where it can be seen from the road or the open forest, is the sort of thing they want to look at. We establish that before ordering, not after a lorry has arrived.
Will gravel stay on a drive that slopes like ours?
Loose gravel will not. Minstead has more fall across it than most of the ground we work on, and anything beyond a gentle slope washes stone to the bottom every winter. A stabilising grid or a bound surface holds it, and a cut off drain across the top stops water running down the drive to begin with. On a flat plot loose stone would be fine; here it turns into an annual chore.
Where does the water go on heavy ground like this?
Not into a hole and hope. The soil around Minstead is slowly permeable and seasonally wet, so a soakaway can stand full for weeks and back up onto the surface it was meant to drain. We test it first, and where it will not take the water we run the discharge to a ditch or another positive outfall, with the National Park's view taken on anything that alters a verge or a boundary.
Can a lorry deliver without churning up the verge?
That is the part to plan out here. Loads get tipped where the wagon is not standing on soft verge, because verge damage in the National Park is somebody else's to answer for and the ground goes soft quickly. We board the barrow run, keep the machine to one defined route and reinstate whatever we have crossed. Where access is genuinely tight, stone comes in smaller loads over more days instead.
Our cottage is old. Does that limit a new patio?
It can. Eleven entries are listed around Minstead, the Church Of All Saints among them, and where the house itself is listed, work tight against it can need consent even though paving normally would not, because setting and any historic surface count. An old solid wall also needs the paving level kept down so the wall can still dry out. We settle which of those apply before a price goes on paper.
