Gutter cleaning in Wool

The clear comes first. Debris comes out by hand into a bucket where there is safe standing beside it, with a scoop for the silt and sludge that packs into the bottom of a long run.

Where a ladder will not sit properly, it comes out on a gutter vacuum with a camera on the reach pole so you can see inside the run. It is bagged and leaves with us. Then each downpipe is flushed and the length proved with water until it goes at the shoe.

Levels and brackets. With the gutter empty the real state of it shows. We go along the brackets, check each one is still biting sound timber, look at every union for a seal that has hardened, and sight the fall from the far end. Downpipes, gullies and hoppers. A downpipe usually blocks at a bend or right at the shoe where it turns into the gully. We rod and flush from the top, then check that the gully below is actually taking it, because clearing a pipe into a blocked gully only moves the puddle.

Valleys. Where two pitches meet, the valley gutter takes everything both slopes shed to one point, and a blocked one backs up under the tiles instead of spilling over an edge. Height and reach. A bungalow can be done from a ladder or with a pole and camera from the ground. A two storey semi on a Wool estate is usually ladder work. An older cottage in the village centre with a valley gutter between two roofs may need a tower. The work at height rules decide which, and the access is priced as a line.

What is in there. Dry leaves come out fast. Moss off concrete tiles forms a wet, heavy mat that has to be dug out by hand, and silt settles in long runs. The number of outlets usually matters more than the length.

The downpipes and gullies. A downpipe blocked at the bend or a gully silted at the foot takes longer than the gutter above. On the clay ground in Wool a blocked gully also means water pooling beside the foundations, so we check it.

Terraces. A mid terrace often has no side access, so the back is reached through the house or a shared path.

Clean or repair. Resealing a joint, rehanging a sagging length or replacing brackets is repair, priced on its own.

Ask any other quote: are the downpipes rodded, are outlets and hoppers checked, and does the debris go with them?

The useful part is that most of it shows up on a clearing visit, while the run is empty: a hardened seal, a loose bracket, a length out of level. What we will not do is put new brackets into a fascia that has gone soft under a leaking joint, because that fails again in a year. If the fascia and soffit have been wet a long time, that gets said on the quote rather than discovered afterwards.
