Most of the cost of clearing a gutter is not the clearing. It is working out where you can safely stand to reach it, and on plots like these that answer changes every few metres.
The usual reasons for the call are ordinary enough. A run that has stopped taking water and is putting a stripe of green down the render. A drip off one joint that has been going for a year. A downpipe that gurgles and then gives up halfway through a downpour.
What is not ordinary is getting to it. Houses here sit in their own ground, with borders, gravel, sloping lawns, greenhouses and conservatories pushed right up under the eaves. So the survey on the free site visit is as much about footings for a ladder as it is about what is in the gutter. We clear by hand, flush every downpipe and watch it at the shoe, and the access goes on the written itemised quote as its own line so you can see what you are paying for.
The work
Reaching it, clearing it, and proving it runs
Three parts to every visit, and the first one is the part most quotes never mention.
Where the ladder goes. A ladder needs firm level ground and a wall it can lean against clear of the gutter. A soft border after a wet week, a gravel drive, a bank falling away from the house or a conservatory roof along the whole back elevation all take that away. We carry boards and a stand-off so nothing rests on the gutter itself, and where a ladder still cannot be footed safely we work from a vacuum on a reach pole with a camera on the head, so you see inside the run on a screen rather than take our word for it. A tower goes up for a tall gable. A scaffold is not something this size of job needs.
What comes out. Leaf litter, seed, moss washed down off the tiles and the fine grit an ageing tile sheds. Wet moss sets into a mat of sludge which is scooped out by hand, because flushing it just moves the problem into the downpipe. It goes in a bag and the bag leaves with us.
Outlets, downpipes and hoppers. The outlet takes the whole run through a hole a couple of inches across, so it is where everything packs. Cleared, then water is run through and watched at the shoe. Anything backing up is rodded and flushed. Any hopper head is checked, because a hopper collects everything and nobody ever looks in one.
The repairs worth doing on the same visit. A union whose seal has hardened and now drips. A bracket that has let go, leaving a sagging length that holds standing water and silts up again within weeks. A missing shoe throwing water at the brickwork, which is how a wall picks up staining and how damp gets a foothold inside. We refix, realign and re-hang to a proper fall rather than replace a run that is sound, and rotten soffit and fascias get photographed rather than covered over.
Outbuildings. Garages, stores and stables have gutters too, and theirs are the ones nobody clears. They go on the quote as separate lines so you can decide.
How it runs
From your call to a written price
Same team from first visit to last, one person to ring, and no sub-contracting your work out to somebody you have never met. The quote is itemised, not a figure on the back of a card: access, the length of run, the number of outlets and downpipes, any repair, and where the debris goes on separate lines, so you can compare it properly against anyone else's.
Nothing is left open or unusable overnight. The site is swept at the end of each day rather than the end of the job, and what comes out leaves with us. If something turns up once we start that nobody could have seen, you get a photograph and a price before we carry on.
Clearing and repairing gutters is maintenance, so no planning application and nothing for building control. There is no conservation area here. What decides the price of a gutter clean
No rate per square metre, because a metre of gutter behind a conifer and a metre on an open gable are not the same metre.
Getting to it. A detached house with a lawn all round, a cottage with a border and a greenhouse under the eaves, and a chalet on a plot that slopes away at the back are three different set-ups before anyone clears a metre. A bungalow run comes off a ladder or a pole, a three storey gable wants a tower, and a valley gutter between two roofs wants a proper platform. The work at height rules are why the access is a priced line rather than something absorbed into a rate.
What is in it, and how far it has travelled. Leaf litter lifts out in minutes. Moss washed off the tiles sets into a wet mat that has to be dug out, and silt in a long run behind a hedge is heavier and slower than anything a photograph shows. The number of outlets matters more than the length, because that is where it packs.
Whether it is a clean or a repair. A joint that drips once it is running again, a downpipe blocked at the shoe, a length of plastic that has sagged between brackets: none of that is clearing, and it is the part that decides whether you are booking an hour or half a day.
Comparing quotes? Ask whether the downpipes are being run through or just the gutter cleared, whether the outlets and hoppers are checked, whether it is a clear or a clear and a check for leaks, and who takes the debris away. Two quotes for the same job are usually two different jobs.

Ring rather than use the form. Water running down a wall in a downpour soaks the brickwork and finds its way to a ceiling faster than most people expect, so a blocked outlet in a wet week goes to the front of the queue. We clear it, run water through to prove it, and tell you honestly if what you actually have is a broken joint rather than a blockage. Tell us if it is coming over onto a path or a doorstep, because in a frost that turns into a different sort of problem overnight. What is under the ladder decides the morning
On an estate the access question answers itself: hard standing all the way round, ladder up, done. Out here it does not, and it is worth understanding because it is the biggest single variable in what this work costs.
A ladder has to be footed on ground that will not move, at the right angle, against something solid. A wet border will not hold it. Gravel will not hold it. A bank that falls away from the back of the house means the top of the ladder is a storey and a half up instead of one. A conservatory or a lean-to along an elevation means there is nowhere to put the feet at all. None of that makes the job impossible, it just changes the method, and the method is what moves the price.
What it means for you is simple. When you ring, mention anything under the eaves: a conservatory, a greenhouse, a raised bed, a sloping lawn, a garage roof in the way. It lets us bring the right kit on the first visit rather than come back with it, and it means the quote reflects the property instead of an average of everyone else's. An annual autumn clear, done after the leaves are down, is the right seasonal frequency for most houses here, with a spring visit where there is a lot growing over the roof.

There is a conservatory along the back. Can you still do that side?
Yes. Nobody stands on a conservatory roof and no ladder goes on one. That elevation is done from a vacuum on a reach pole, with a camera head so we can both see the state of the run before and after. It takes a little longer than ladder work, which is why it shows separately on the quote.
Our garage gutter has never been cleared. Does it matter?
It matters more than the house, oddly, because nobody is watching it. A garage run that has been full for years soaks the wall plate and the timber behind the fascia, and the repair is many times the cost of the clearing. It is a small line on a quote and always worth adding.
Can you do it without coming into the garden much?
Mostly, yes. We work off boards where the ground is soft, keep off borders and beds, and sweep up before we leave. If a bed genuinely cannot be crossed we will reach that length from a pole instead. Tell us about anything precious and we will plan around it.
Is it worth having the downpipes checked as well?
Always, and it is included. A gutter that has been cleared into a blocked downpipe is a gutter that will overflow again in the next heavy rain. Every pipe gets water run through it and watched at the bottom, and if the blockage is below ground at the gully we tell you what that needs.
How long does the whole thing take?
