Gutter cleaning in Wimborne Minster

A gutter clean is only finished when water runs from every gutter to the ground. Most blockages sit at the outlet, in a hopper head or at the foot of a downpipe, so those are cleared, rodded and flushed until water tipped in at the far end comes out at the bottom.

The clearing. Leaves, moss washed off the tiles, roofing grit and the silt they pack into are scooped out by hand or lifted with the vacuum, then bagged.

Downpipes, hoppers and swan-necks. A downpipe blocks in one of three places: the swan-neck under the eaves, where two bends catch leaves; the hopper head on an older front; or the shoe and gully at the bottom, which fill with silt. We rod from the top, clear the gully and flush it through. A gully that stays full after that means a drain fault, and we tell you so.

Whatever your gutters are made of. Most modern houses have uPVC, in half-round, square or the deeper ogee profile. Older buildings often keep cast iron, and some have aluminium. Plastic perishes at the seal in each union joint and drips. Cast iron rusts at the joints and can crack under a ladder, so we use a stand-off or a pole. A valley gutter between two roof slopes, or a box gutter behind a parapet, is cleared from above.

Repairs found on the way. Sagging between brackets, a perished union seal, a bracket into soft timber, a length out of fall. Each is photographed and priced first. Fascias, soffits and gutter guards. While we are up there, the fascia and soffit can be washed down too. Gutter guards, hedgehog brushes or mesh, keep out big leaves but not moss, grit and seeds, and the guard has to come out to be cleaned. Under big trees they can earn their place. On the day, the gutters are cleared, every downpipe is rodded and water is run through at each end. If the back run can only be reached through the house, we sheet the floor on the way through, and that is the only time you need to be in. Height and platform. A bungalow or two storey semi cleared from the ground is the quickest job. A three storey front on a narrow pavement needs a tower and people managed around it. A box gutter behind a parapet needs somebody at roof level.

Outlets and downpipes. Each one is rodded and tested, so a house with an extension, a porch and a conservatory has more to clear than its length suggests.

How long since the last clean. Dry leaves lift out quickly. Moss off an old tiled roof packs into a heavy wet mat, and silt under trees takes time to dig out.

The back, and repairs. A rear run reached only through the house or a shared yard means carrying everything in and out. A dripping joint or a sagging length is a repair, shown to you and priced separately.

When you compare quotes, ask: are the downpipes rodded or only the gutter scooped? Is every outlet tested with water? How will they reach the tallest side, and is that included? Will you see photos? Who takes the waste?

A parapet gutter is the one gutter in Wimborne Minster that a clean from the pavement misses. Several listed town houses on West Borough hide their roof behind a parapet wall. Behind that wall sits a box gutter, a lined channel draining through the parapet or down inside the building. You cannot see it from the street and a pole cannot reach it. When it blocks, the water does not spill down the front where you would notice. It backs up over the lining and comes inside, often as a stain on a top floor ceiling.
