Gutter cleaning in Christchurch

Clearing comes first, because nobody can judge a Christchurch gutter full of silt. Out by hand or by vacuum, then proved with water. Leaves, moss washed off the tiles and the black sludge they break down into all go into a bag, never over the flower bed. Then every outlet is cleared and water is run down each downpipe until you see it arrive at the shoe or the gully.

Most of it from the ground. A gutter vacuum on a reach pole works an ordinary eaves run from the lawn or the path, including one above a conservatory, a lean-to or a bay window. Downpipes, hoppers and gullies. A downpipe usually jams at the swan-neck under the eaves or at the shoe at the bottom. The fixings, which is the local part. Salt air works into any small break in a paint film, so ferrous fixings go first. On cast iron the spike or the bolt through the joint rusts, swells and cracks the ear off the length it is holding. On plastic the screws into the fascia corrode and the bracket lets go, so the run sags between supports and the fall reverses. What your gutter is made of. Plastic comes in half-round or square section, and an old run goes brittle, so it is cleared gently. Cast iron, half-round or ogee on spikes and brackets, is worth keeping when sound: a weeping joint can be re-bedded and drawn up again, and only a cracked length or a broken ear has to be replaced. Aluminium is cleared like plastic, with the same check on its screws. Guards, and the outside face. Mesh or brush guards help on an easy run under broad leaves. They do little against moss off the roof or needles from a pine, which mat on top or slip underneath. Ask of any other quote: are the downpipes flushed and proved with water, are the outlets and hoppers tested, will you see photos of the inside of the run, and who takes the waste away?

So the fixings deserve more attention than the gutter. Ask for the brackets and the outlets to be checked and reported on as part of a clear, not priced as a separate survey later. Change a corroded screw or a rusted spike at the time, because a bracket that lets go takes a section of run and sometimes a length of fascia with it.
