Insulation work in Winfrith Newburgh starts with what shape the roof space is, not with which material to buy. A loft with a floor you can crawl across takes a cross layer over the joists in a morning. A low purlin roof, or a cottage ceiling that follows the slope with no loft above it at all, is a different job in a different material, and the survey is what tells the two apart.

Nothing in a hand cut roof is evenly spaced
Cold loft top-ups. The standard job and the one that pays back first. Eco roll mineral wool laid between and over the joists, the second layer crossing the first at right angles so that each joist stops being a cold bridge straight through the ceiling, finished at around 270mm. Where the old quilt has settled, been compressed under boarding or been dragged aside for cabling, we make the gaps good rather than assume the depth is still there. Anything wet or nested in is bagged and leaves with us. Rigid vent trays go in at the eaves on the same visit, and if you want the storage back the boards go up on legs above the quilt.
Low eaves and hand cut roofs. There are close to sixty listed entries in the parish, and a roof cut on site is nothing like a modern trussed one. The joists sit at no regular spacing, so rolls are cut in rather than run out, there are purlins and collars to work round, and the eaves are usually too low to reach from inside, which is exactly where a loft quietly loses its depth because nobody can get to the last metre of it. Where a roof is thatched, the thatch is already a thick layer and the space beneath it has to stay dry and moving, so we look before anything goes down.
In a cottage bedroom, a dormer or a converted outbuilding there is no loft floor, so the insulation goes at rafter level instead. That is rigid board work: PIR such as Celotex cut tight between and under the rafters, a vapour control layer behind the plasterboard, and a clear ventilation gap kept above it. Built that way a warm roof gets a sloping ceiling near the 0.16 figure a renovated element is expected to reach, and where the head height cannot spare the thickness a multi-layer foil quilt such as TLX gets most of the way.
Where a wall has no cavity, and plenty here do not, the choice is an internal lining or external wall insulation. A header tank and a run of pipes in the roof space is common out here, and that space gets colder the day the ceiling below it is insulated, so lagging is part of the job rather than an afterthought and nothing is laid under the tank. The hatch gets a board and a draught seal, and downlighters get fire rated covers so the quilt can run over them.

Ring round this village and you will find plenty of houses with a tank in the garden and no gas meter anywhere. That belongs on an insulation page, because it changes what the work is worth rather than what the work is. A u-value describes how fast a ceiling or a wall lets heat through, and it is the same number whatever is making the heat.
The bill is not. Heat bought by the tanker load, or off an electricity meter, costs more per unit than heat off the mains, so the identical loft, the identical rolls and the identical day's work return more here than they would in a town on gas. Nobody sells insulation that way. It is the honest version.
Two things follow from it.
