Rainwater under the trees
Big trees, big roofs, and gutters that fill twice a year
Under mature parkland trees an annual clear is not enough. Where beech, lime and chestnut hang anywhere near a roof, the gutters want doing twice: once after the leaves are down and once in spring, when the bud cases and small twig come.
The calls follow the weather. A wet October and somebody watches the gutter run over the front edge in a way it never used to. A dry summer followed by a downpour and a season of moss comes off the tiles into the run in one go. Or somebody notices a green stain spreading down the wall below one joint that has been dripping quietly for a couple of years.
We look at the whole rainwater system on the free visit, not the one length that is misbehaving: every run, every outlet, every hopper, each downpipe and where it discharges. Then you get a written itemised quote that separates the clearing from any repair, so nobody is guessing which part of the price is which.
The work

The clear. Debris comes out by hand into a bucket wherever there is safe standing beside it, with a scoop for the silt and sludge that packs into the bottom of a long run. Where a ladder cannot be footed properly, it comes out on a gutter vacuum with a camera on the reach pole. Everything is bagged and leaves with us. Then each downpipe is flushed and the whole length proved with water until it goes away at the shoe.
Twig, not just leaf. Under broadleaf trees the awkward material is not the leaf, which will often wash through, but the small twig that comes down with it. A twig bridges an outlet and then catches every leaf behind it, so a run can look nearly clean from the ground and still hold three inches of water. That is why we check each outlet by eye, not just the length of the gutter.
Cast iron runs. The older buildings around here still carry cast iron, and it is worth keeping. It fails from the back, where nobody looks: rust lifts under old paint on the hidden face, the section thins, and eventually a bolted union weeps. On those we clear gently, wire back and treat where we can reach, renew a union seal and refix a bracket rather than condemn a length that has decades left in it.
Plastic runs. Everything newer is half round or square line on plastic brackets, and its failures are different. Ultraviolet makes it brittle, brackets let go, and a length sags between two of them so water stands in a low spot instead of running to the fall. Realigning and re-hanging fixes most of that, and it is a great deal cheaper than replacing a run that is only out of level.
What a blocked run does to the building. Water going over the front edge soaks the same strip of brickwork or render every time it rains, so it never dries, and you get the dark band, the green growth and eventually damp on an inside face. Water going backwards over a sagging gutter rots the fascia and the soffit behind it. Neither is expensive to prevent and both are expensive to put right.

What decides the price of a gutter clean
No rate per square metre, because a metre of gutter behind a conifer and a metre on an open gable are not the same metre.
Getting to it. A cottage on the lane, a large house standing in its own grounds and a long low range of outbuildings are three different jobs before anybody opens a ladder. A bungalow run comes off a ladder or a pole, a three storey gable wants a tower, and a valley gutter between two roofs wants a proper platform. The work at height rules are why the access is a priced line rather than something absorbed into a rate.
What is in it, and how far it has travelled. Leaf litter lifts out in minutes. Moss washed off the tiles sets into a wet mat that has to be dug out, and silt in a long run behind a hedge is heavier and slower than anything a photograph shows. The number of outlets matters more than the length, because that is where it packs.
Whether it is a clean or a repair. A joint that drips once it is running again, a downpipe blocked at the shoe, a length of plastic that has sagged between brackets: none of that is clearing, and it is the part that decides whether you are booking an hour or half a day.
Comparing quotes? Ask whether the downpipes are being run through or just the gutter cleared, whether the outlets and hoppers are checked, whether it is a clear or a clear and a check for leaks, and who takes the debris away. Two quotes for the same job are usually two different jobs.

Ring rather than use the form. Water running down a wall in a downpour soaks the brickwork and finds its way to a ceiling faster than most people expect, so a blocked outlet in a wet week goes to the front of the queue. We clear it, run water through to prove it, and tell you honestly if what you actually have is a broken joint rather than a blockage. Mention it if the water is coming off a valley or a long run under trees, because those refill fastest and are the ones that back up rather than spill. The conservation area controls the look, not the maintenance
People here worry that anything touching the outside of the building needs permission. For gutter work it almost never does. Clearing, flushing, refixing a bracket, renewing a union seal, repainting cast iron the colour it already was: all of that is upkeep, and upkeep is not development. Nobody needs to be asked and nothing needs to be applied for.
Where the conservation area does bite is on a change of appearance. Swapping a cast iron half round for a white plastic one on a frontage that faces a road, moving a downpipe to a new position on a visible elevation, or boxing in an open eaves are all changes to the look of the building rather than repairs to it. That is worth knowing before you accept a quote, because the cheapest answer a contractor can give you on a corroded run is to rip it off and put plastic up, and on the wrong elevation here that is the answer that causes you a problem. The practical position is simple. Repair cast iron while it can still be repaired, keep the profile and the colour if a section really has to be renewed, and check the address first. We do that as part of the survey rather than after the fact.
