The clear itself. Out by hand into a bucket where there is safe standing, with a scoop for the packed silt and sludge in the bottom of a long run. Where a ladder is the wrong answer it comes out on a gutter vacuum with a camera on the reach pole. It is bagged and leaves with us. Then every downpipe is flushed and the run proved with water until it goes away at the shoe. A gutter that looks empty is not the same as a gutter that drains.

Fixings, every visit. This is the part that matters near the coast and the part most quotes leave out. With the run empty we go along every bracket, look at each union for a seal gone hard or a bolt rusted thin, and test the downpipe clips. Anything loose is refixed and anything dropped is realigned so the fall runs to the outlet again. Half the overflows we attend on this side of the Island are a level problem, not a blockage.

Bungalow runs. A third of the dwellings here are bungalows, so the runs are long, low and mostly reachable from a ladder on firm ground, which takes the biggest cost out of the job. The overflow then lands on the cills and the bottom of the wall rather than on a path, so it is worth doing on time.

Moss off the slope. Damp salt air keeps a roof surface wetter for longer between showers, and a wetter tile grows more moss. The first heavy rain after a dry spell washes a season of it into the gutter as a wet mat that will not flush and has to be dug out. If a gutter fills faster than the trees nearby can explain, the roof is the source.

Valley gutters, and what a blockage actually does. Where two pitches meet there is a valley gutter, and on a few older buildings a lead box gutter behind a parapet. Blocked, those do not spill over a front edge, they back up under the covering and show as staining on a ceiling. A blocked eaves run is kinder: water down the render or the brickwork, a green stripe, and in time damp on the inside face.

Repairs, and the honest limit of them. A dripping joint that wants a new union seal, a bracket refixed into sound wood, a sagging length re-hung to level, a fascia and soffit softened by a long standing leak: most of that is cheap and buys years. Where a section has corroded through we say so and price replacement separately rather than hide it inside a cleaning price.

No rate per square metre, because a metre of gutter behind a conifer and a metre on an open gable are not the same metre.

Getting to it. A single storey bungalow on firm ground, a two storey house on a lane and a converted outbuilding with a low eaves are three different jobs before anyone touches the debris. A bungalow run comes off a ladder or a pole, a three storey gable wants a tower, and a valley gutter between two roofs wants a proper platform. The work at height rules are why the access is a priced line rather than something absorbed into a rate.

What is in it, and how far it has travelled. Leaf litter lifts out in minutes. Moss washed off the tiles sets into a wet mat that has to be dug out, and silt in a long run behind a hedge is heavier and slower than anything a photograph shows. The number of outlets matters more than the length, because that is where it packs.

Whether it is a clean or a repair. A joint that drips once it is running again, a downpipe blocked at the shoe, a length of plastic that has sagged between brackets: none of that is clearing, and it is the part that decides whether you are booking an hour or half a day.

Comparing quotes? Ask whether the downpipes are being run through or just the gutter cleared, whether the outlets and hoppers are checked, whether it is a clear or a clear and a check for leaks, and who takes the debris away. Two quotes for the same job are usually two different jobs.

Where something is renewed on an exposed elevation, stainless or properly galvanised fixings are worth the small extra, because the cheap ones will be off again within a few winters.
